A thyristor is a type of power semiconductor device featuring a four-layer, three-terminal (anode, cathode, gate) PNPN structure. It is triggered by a gate signal to switch from a blocking (off) state to a conducting (on) state and remains conducting until the anode-to-cathode current drops below its holding value or a reverse voltage is applied. Beyond standard devices such as conventional thyristors (SCRs) and bidirectional thyristors (TRIACs), this study also covers advanced modules like GTO (Gate Turn-Off Thyristor) and IGCT (Integrated Gate-Commutated Thyristor) which offer higher switching capabilities and are designed for high-voltage, high-current industrial applications.

The global thyristor market—including both discrete devices (conventional SCRs, bidirectional thyristors) and modules such as GTO and IGCT—is experiencing steady development, reflecting a shift toward high-voltage, high-current power switching in modern electronics and industrial systems. In terms of product structure, thyristors can be classified by device type (SCR, bidirectional thyristor, GTO/IGCT modules), power rating (from tens of amperes to thousands, blocking voltages from hundreds to thousands of volts), and application domain (industrial control, power transmission, renewable energy systems, transportation traction, computing & communications).

From a regional standpoint, the Asia-Pacific region leads the global market with approximately 61% market share, followed by Europe (~15%) and North America (~17%). In terms of competitive structure, major global manufacturers—such as STMicroelectronics, WeEn Semiconductors, Renesas Electronics, Littelfuse and others—dominate with the top four firms controlling about 54% of the market. On the application side, industrial control accounts for the largest share at around 34%, followed by consumer electronics (28%) and computing & communications (22%).

Regarding cost structure, key cost components include the power switching device itself (roughly 45%–55%), packaging and structural components, driver and control circuitry, testing and certification, and manufacturing overhead. In terms of the value chain, the upstream segment comprises power device chip providers and module makers; midstream involves packaging, module integration and final assembly; downstream covers industrial automation equipment manufacturers, power supply system integrators, and electronics OEMs, illustrating a structure of “upstream concentrated, mid-stream standardized manufacturing, downstream broadly diversified.” Competitive advantages reside in device performance, thermal management and manufacturing automation.

Looking ahead, thyristor technology is advancing toward higher current capacity, higher blocking voltage, faster switching response, wider temperature tolerance, and modular/Intelligent designs.
