A semi-active automotive shock absorber is a type of automotive damper capable of adjusting its damping characteristics in real time or near real time based on vehicle operating conditions, road inputs, and body-motion information. It typically consists of a variable-damping shock absorber, an electronic control unit, sensors, and actuators. By adjusting valve openings, fluid properties, or other damping-control elements, the system changes the damping force during compression and rebound, thereby dynamically balancing ride comfort, handling stability, and tire-road contact performance.

Compared with conventional passive shock absorbers, semi-active automotive shock absorbers can actively vary damping parameters but generally do not apply additional driving force directly to the suspension system. As a result, their energy consumption and system complexity are lower than those of fully active suspension systems. Typical technical approaches include solenoid valve-controlled continuously variable damping, dual-stage valve damping control, and magnetorheological damping. These systems are widely used in mid- to high-end passenger vehicles, new energy vehicles, and other vehicle models with higher requirements for chassis performance.

In 2025, global production of semi-active automotive shock absorbers reached 34.21 million units, with an average selling price of US$107.27 per unit.

Semi-active automotive shock absorbers are important actuating components in intelligent chassis and suspension systems. Their core function is to adjust damping characteristics in real time according to vehicle speed, steering, braking, body attitude, and road inputs, without continuously applying additional active driving force to the suspension system. Compared with conventional passive shock absorbers, semi-active shock absorbers provide greater adaptability to changing driving conditions. Compared with fully active suspension systems, they generally feature lower energy consumption, lower system complexity, and lower cost. As a result, they have become an important technical solution for mid- to high-end passenger vehicles, new energy vehicles, and intelligent chassis systems. Major technical approaches include solenoid valve-controlled continuously variable damping, dual-stage valve damping control, smart damping control, and magnetorheological damping.

From an industry-chain perspective, upstream suppliers mainly provide precision valve systems, piston rods, cylinders, seals, damping fluids, solenoid valves, magnetorheological fluids, sensors, electronic control units, and control chips. Midstream manufacturers are responsible for shock absorber and suspension system design, mechanical manufacturing, control algorithm development, system integration, and vehicle calibration. Downstream customers mainly include passenger vehicle manufacturers and selected commercial vehicle manufacturers. As semi-active suspension systems increasingly need to coordinate with chassis domain controllers, braking systems, steering systems, and vehicle body-motion control systems, technical barriers have gradually expanded from traditional mechanical manufacturing to mechatronic integration, hydraulic control, software algorithms, and vehicle-level calibration. Joint development between suppliers and automakers has therefore become increasingly important.

Another major growth driver is rising consumer demand for ride comfort and handling performance. Conventional fixed-damping shock absorbers inherently involve a trade-off between comfort and handling, whereas semi-active shock absorbers can dynamically adjust damping according to road conditions and driving modes. This enables differentiated suspension characteristics under urban driving, highway driving, rapid acceleration, braking, and cornering conditions. As competition in the automotive industry increasingly extends beyond traditional parameters such as power and interior space toward ride quality and chassis performance, more automakers are adopting technologies such as CDC, SDC, DSV, and magnetorheological shock absorbers as important features in upgraded trims and premium vehicle configurations.

In addition, localization of key components and cost reductions achieved through larger-scale production are supporting market expansion. Historically, semi-active shock absorbers were mainly supplied by leading international manufacturers, with relatively high system costs limiting their application largely to luxury brands and premium vehicle models. In recent years, Chinese suppliers have made continuous progress in electronically controlled valves, magnetorheological materials, sensors, ECUs, control software, and vehicle calibration. Meanwhile, the rapid model-development cycles of China's new energy vehicle industry have provided a larger platform for the mass-production validation of new suspension technologies.
