Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), also known as hypromellose, is a non-ionic, water-soluble cellulose ether produced by chemically modifying natural cellulose with methyl and hydroxypropyl groups. It is typically supplied as a white or off-white powder and provides thickening, water-retention, binding, film-forming, stabilizing, suspending, emulsifying, and thermal-gelation properties. HPMC is widely used in construction materials, pharmaceuticals, food products, personal care products, coatings, and other industrial applications. In pharmaceutical applications, it is commonly used as a tablet binder, film-coating agent, controlled-release matrix material, suspending agent, and raw material for vegetarian capsules.

HPMC production begins with natural cellulose raw materials—primarily refined cotton linters or wood pulp fibers. These undergo alkalization (using a 50% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution) to form alkali cellulose, followed by an etherification reaction in a high-pressure reactor with two etherifying agents: chloromethane (a methylating agent) and propylene oxide (a hydroxypropylating agent). The final product is obtained through subsequent processes including neutralization, washing, drying, and pulverization. As critical etherifying agents, price fluctuations in propylene oxide and chloromethane directly impact product costs. Labor and quality control costs account for a larger share of the total for pharmaceutical-grade products, as they must meet GMP standards, ensure uniform degrees of substitution, and undergo testing for low ash impurity levels.
