Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), also known as hypromellose, is a non-ionic, water-soluble cellulose ether produced by chemically modifying natural cellulose with methyl and hydroxypropyl groups. It is typically supplied as a white or off-white powder and provides thickening, water-retention, binding, film-forming, stabilizing, suspending, emulsifying, and thermal-gelation properties. HPMC is widely used in construction materials, pharmaceuticals, food products, personal care products, coatings, and other industrial applications. In pharmaceutical applications, it is commonly used as a tablet binder, film-coating agent, controlled-release matrix material, suspending agent, and raw material for vegetarian capsules.
The HPMC is mainly used for construction, coatings, personal care and pharmaceutical, etc. And about 60% of the product is consumed in construction industry. HPMC production begins with natural cellulose raw materials—primarily refined cotton linters or wood pulp fibers. These undergo alkalization (using a 50% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution) to form alkali cellulose, followed by an etherification reaction in a high-pressure reactor with two etherifying agents: chloromethane (a methylating agent) and propylene oxide (a hydroxypropylating agent). The final product is obtained through subsequent processes including neutralization, washing, drying, and pulverization. Approximate market prices for key raw materials are: refined cotton ($500–$1,500/ton), propylene oxide ($1,500–$2,000/ton), chloromethane ($800–$1,200/ton), and sodium hydroxide ($200–$400/ton).
Raw material costs dominate the cost structure; refined cotton or wood pulp—serving as the cellulose source—represents the largest single expense, accounting for a significant proportion of total costs. As critical etherifying agents, price fluctuations in propylene oxide and chloromethane directly impact product costs. In 2025, periodic supply shortages of refined cotton and wood pulp fibers placed cost pressures on some small and medium-sized producers. In addition to raw materials, energy consumption (electricity, steam) and equipment depreciation are significant cost components; the etherification reaction requires high-temperature and high-pressure conditions (80–100°C, 0.3–2.2 MPa), necessitating substantial investment in reactors, dryers, and pulverizing equipment. Labor and quality control costs account for a larger share of the total for pharmaceutical-grade products, as they must meet GMP standards, ensure uniform degrees of substitution, and undergo testing for low ash impurity levels.
