DNA data information storage is a novel molecular storage method that utilizes synthetically produced DNA molecules to preserve digital information. Its fundamental principle involves converting binary data—such as text, images, audio-visual content, and databases—into DNA sequences composed of the four bases (A, T, C, and G). Data is written via DNA synthesis, while retrieval involves using PCR, molecular search, and DNA sequencing technologies to access the target sequences, followed by error correction and decoding to reconstruct the original files. Compared to traditional media like hard drives, magnetic tapes, and optical discs, DNA offers advantages such as high storage density, compact physical size, low energy consumption for static storage, and an exceptionally long theoretical lifespan. It is particularly well-suited for "deep cold data"—information requiring long-term preservation but infrequent access—including government archives, scientific research data, medical imaging, film and video master copies, cultural heritage records, and AI training datasets.

Currently, DNA data storage is transitioning from laboratory validation to engineering development and early-stage commercialization. Key market participants include DNA synthesis firms, sequencing platform providers, molecular storage startups, research institutions, and traditional data storage vendors. Applications are concentrated in scenarios requiring ultra-long-term preservation and infrequent access, such as government archives, scientific research data, medical imaging, cultural heritage preservation, film and video master copies, AI training datasets, and corporate compliance records. In the future, this technology will focus on developing towards chip-based and enzymatic DNA synthesis, high-throughput parallel writing, low-cost packaging, fast random access, automated sequencing and decoding, and standardized data center interfaces. It may also serve as a supplement to magnetic tape, optical storage, and cloud archiving, forming a new storage layer for deep cold data. The continued growth of global data volume, the long-term data archiving needs brought about by generative AI, the space and energy consumption pressure of traditional data centers, the need for permanent preservation of critical digital assets, and the advancements in DNA synthesis, nanopore sequencing, error correction algorithms, and molecular retrieval technologies are the main factors driving market growth; however, the high writing cost, slow read and write speed, system complexity, and imperfect standards system will still restrict its large-scale popularization in the short term.
