Data is written via DNA synthesis, while retrieval involves using PCR, molecular search, and DNA sequencing technologies to access the target sequences, followed by error correction and decoding to reconstruct the original files. Compared to traditional media like hard drives, magnetic tapes, and optical discs, DNA offers advantages such as high storage density, compact physical size, low energy consumption for static storage, and an exceptionally long theoretical lifespan. It is particularly well-suited for "deep cold data"—information requiring long-term preservation but infrequent access—including government archives, scientific research data, medical imaging, film and video master copies, cultural heritage records, and AI training datasets.

Currently, DNA data storage is transitioning from laboratory validation to engineering development and early-stage commercialization. Key market participants include DNA synthesis firms, sequencing platform providers, molecular storage startups, research institutions, and traditional data storage vendors. Applications are concentrated in scenarios requiring ultra-long-term preservation and infrequent access, such as government archives, scientific research data, medical imaging, cultural heritage preservation, film and video master copies, AI training datasets, and corporate compliance records.
