They are used as coupling agents, adhesion promoters, crosslinkers, surface modifiers, hydrophobing agents, corrosion-resistant coating additives, filler and glass-fiber treatment agents, resin modifiers, and sol-gel intermediates. Key performance parameters include functional group type, degree of oligomerization, residual alkoxy content, alcohol release, active content, viscosity, stability, water or solvent compatibility, flash point, pH, shelf life, and compatibility with downstream formulations.

Compared with monomeric silanes, oligomeric products typically offer higher flash point, lower volatility, reduced alcohol release, safer handling, and stronger multi-point interfacial reactivity. This makes them suitable for coatings, adhesives, sealants, construction water repellents, mineral filler treatment, wire and cable compounds, composites, and waterborne surface treatment systems. Evonik defines Dynasylan 6490 as a vinyl- and methoxy-containing oligomeric siloxane and positions it as a compatibilizer between inorganic fillers and organic polymers, which reflects the core value of this material class: interface coupling combined with polymer modification.
From the demand side, growth is mainly driven by three application clusters: substitution of monomeric silanes in low-VOC coatings, adhesives, and sealants; durable hydrophobic protection for concrete, aerated concrete, masonry, stone, and facades; and interface modification in cables, photovoltaic encapsulation films, mineral-filled polymers, glass fiber, and composites. WACKER describes SILRES BS 66 as a liquid oligomeric siloxane used primarily for in-plant water-repellent treatment of aerated concrete and also for facade water repellency after dilution, which indicates that construction hydrophobing is one of the clearest large-scale applications for silane/siloxane oligomers.
