Laser Marking Machine for Semiconductor is a precision laser-processing system specifically designed to create permanent identification marks, characters, serial numbers, logos, barcodes, Data Matrix/QR codes, wafer IDs and other traceability information on semiconductor wafers, dies/chips, IC packages, leadframes, ceramic packages and related semiconductor components. The process is non-contact and generally creates a mark through localized ablation, engraving, surface-color change or other laser–material interaction, avoiding the mechanical stress associated with contact marking methods.

Compared with a general industrial laser marker, semiconductor-specific machines normally require substantially higher levels of positioning accuracy, beam control, vision alignment, automatic focusing, wafer or tray handling, code verification, MES/SECS-GEM integration and contamination control. Dedicated wafer-marking equipment can handle Si as well as compound-semiconductor materials such as SiC, GaN and GaAs; TOWA LASERFRONT, for example, offers its SL473 series for Si, GaAs, SiC, GaN and other wafer materials.

Market Drivers

1. The principal market driver is the continuing expansion of semiconductor manufacturing and advanced packaging, particularly for AI processors, HBM, automotive electronics, power semiconductors, MEMS and compound-semiconductor devices. As devices become smaller and manufacturing flows become more complex, reliable unit-level traceability becomes increasingly important. Laser marking allows wafers, packages and individual chips to carry permanent machine-readable identifiers throughout fabrication, assembly, testing and final shipment, supporting process control, quality management and failure analysis.

2. A second driver is the transition toward high-density 2D codes and automated manufacturing. Semiconductor factories increasingly connect laser markers with machine vision, wafer-ID readers, inspection systems, automatic loaders/unloaders and factory information systems. This moves the equipment from a simple marking device toward an integrated traceability station. Dedicated machines already incorporate automatic positioning, code recognition and post-mark inspection; TOWA LASERFRONT and EO Technics both offer such functions in semiconductor wafer marking systems.

3. Growth is also being supported by SiC, GaN and other compound-semiconductor production, where marking must provide high contrast without introducing excessive heat, cracking, contamination or subsurface damage. This is encouraging greater use of UV, green, short-pulse and ultrafast lasers, together with higher-precision motion platforms and machine-vision systems. Semiconductor applications therefore increasingly favor application-specific equipment rather than conventional general-purpose engraving machines.
