LCoS light valve chips are reflective microdisplay devices based on a CMOS silicon-based active matrix backplane. They integrate a liquid crystal layer, alignment structure, transparent cover, and basic encapsulation on the reflective pixel electrodes. Incident light from an external LED or laser source is polarized before entering the liquid crystal layer. The driving voltage corresponding to each pixel changes the alignment of the liquid crystal molecules, achieving light intensity, polarization state, or phase modulation. The image is then output from the silicon-based reflective electrodes. Compared to traditional transmissive liquid crystals, the driving circuitry and wiring can be arranged below the reflective pixels, giving LCoS the characteristics of small pixel pitch, high fill rate, weak screen-door effect, high resolution, and good image continuity. Primarily used in AR and XR near-eye displays, micro-projections, home theaters and professional projectors, automotive HUDs, and industrial and medical displays.
The upstream of the industry chain includes silicon wafers and wafer foundry, CMOS backplane design, liquid crystal materials, cover glass, alignment materials, sealants, FPCs, packaging materials, and testing equipment. LCoS light valve chips are located in the midstream core display device segment. Downstream, display module and optical engine manufacturers further integrate drive control, light sources, polarization beam splitters, and imaging lens assemblies, ultimately entering AR glasses, HUDs, projectors, and professional display equipment. LCoS light valve chips are experiencing a dual-engine growth trajectory, driven by near-eye displays and high-end projection. LCoS microdisplay chips are transitioning from mature devices primarily used in home theaters and professional projectors to high-pixel-density display platforms serving AR glasses, automotive HUDs, and new human-computer interaction terminals. Sony's SXRD and JVC's D-ILA continue to support the high-end projection market, while OMNIVISION, Himax, and new Asian entrants are shifting their R&D focus to small-size near-eye displays. Future growth will not be primarily about increasing chip area but about improving resolution, frame rate, and driver integration within a smaller display area.
