Inorganic non-metallic biomaterials mainly include bioceramics, bioglasses, oxide and calcium phosphate ceramics, and medical carbon materials. Bioceramics possess excellent properties such as high hardness, high strength, low density, high temperature resistance, and corrosion resistance, and have wide applications in medical bone substitutes, implants, and dental and orthodontic prostheses. 3D-printed ceramic implants include materials such as silicon nitride, alumina, and hydroxyapatite. Scientists in bioengineering and regenerative medicine have utilized these characteristics to develop ceramic bio-scaffolds for repairing bone defects.

Bioglass is an aggregate of silicates with randomly arranged molecules, primarily containing sodium, calcium, and phosphorus ions. Under specific ratios and chemical reaction conditions, it forms a complex containing calcium hydroxyphosphate, exhibiting high biomimetic properties and serving as a major inorganic component of bone tissue. Due to its degradability and bioactivity, bioglass can induce bone tissue regeneration, making it widely used as a tissue engineering scaffold material in bone tissue engineering research and showing great promise in the field of inorganic non-metallic materials.

Medical inorganic non-metallic materials mainly include structural ceramics such as alumina and zirconia, bioceramics such as hydroxyapatite and calcium phosphate bone cement, bioactive glass, medical carbon materials, and related composite materials. These are used in artificial joints, dental restorations, bone defect filling, spine and craniofacial repairs, and medical device coatings. The future market will not rely solely on the growth of traditional implant volumes, but will be driven by upgrades in orthopedic and dental treatments, personalized restorations, and regenerative medicine. Zirconia continues to expand its application in crowns, bridges, implants, and abutments due to its strength, biocompatibility, and aesthetics; zirconia-toughened alumina, by improving wear resistance and fracture properties, is extending its reach to hip, knee, shoulder, and spine implant components.

Materials technology is shifting from "bioinert load-bearing" to "bioactive repair." Hydroxyapatite, calcium phosphate, and bioactive glass can provide scaffolds for bone tissue ingrowth, and some self-curing bone cements can form hydroxyapatite, a bone mineral-like substance, after implantation and be gradually replaced by new bone. Companies like Stryker have used injectable calcium phosphate, calcium sulfate composites, and bioactive glass for bone defects and craniofacial repair, reflecting that product value is upgrading from simple filling to the synergistic design of pore structure, degradation rate, ion release, and tissue regeneration capabilities.
