The global Flame Retardant for Polycarbonate market size was US$ 138 million in 2025 and is forecast to reach a readjusted size of US$ 185 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 4.4% during the forecast period 2026-2032.
Flame retardants for polycarbonate (PC) are chemical additives or compounds designed to enhance the fire resistance of polycarbonate materials. While PC inherently possesses better flame retardant characteristics than other common polymers such as polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), its natural limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 21%–24% and V-2 flammability rating may fall short of stricter fire safety standards required in specialized applications. Therefore, flame retardants are incorporated into PC formulations to increase its flame retardancy, reduce flammability, and help the material meet stringent safety certifications such as UL 94 V-0. These additives work by disrupting combustion processes, either through chemical reactions in the gas phase or by promoting the formation of a protective char layer on the polymer’s surface during exposure to heat.
Market Overview and Product Segmentation
The global market for flame retardants used in polycarbonate is driven by increasing demand across multiple sectors, including electrical and electronic devices, automotive components, construction materials, medical equipment, and food packaging. Among various flame retardant chemistries, organo-phosphorus compounds dominate the market, representing approximately 71% of the total product segment. These phosphorus-based retardants are favored due to their high efficiency, compatibility with polycarbonate resin, and relatively lower environmental impact compared to halogenated alternatives. Other types of flame retardants such as nitrogen-based and inorganic compounds are also used, though to a lesser extent, often in synergistic combinations to improve thermal stability and reduce smoke production. The most significant application segment is electrical and electronics, accounting for about 53% of total demand, owing to strict fire safety regulations in consumer and industrial devices.
Global Market Trends and Regional Insights
Asia-Pacific holds the leading position in the global flame retardant for polycarbonate market, with a market share of approximately 64%. This dominance is fueled by the rapid industrialization, expanding electronics manufacturing base, and growing automotive production in countries like China, Japan, South Korea, and India. Europe and North America follow, with market shares of 16% and 15%, respectively, supported by stringent environmental and safety standards. Major industry players such as ICL, Daihachi Chemical, and Zhejiang Wansheng collectively control around 46% of the global market, indicating a moderately consolidated competitive landscape. Looking forward, the market is expected to grow steadily due to increasing fire safety regulations, rising awareness about material safety, and technological advancements in eco-friendly flame retardant formulations that reduce toxic emissions without compromising performance.

As one of the five major engineering plastics, polycarbonate (PC) is widely used in electronic appliances, lighting, building materials, automotive parts, food packaging and medical devices due to its advantages of high strength, high transparency, high impact resistance and heat resistance. The glass transition temperature of PC is 140-150℃, the heat deformation temperature is 135℃, and the use range is from -60℃ to 120℃. It has good thermal stability and dimensional stability. Although the flame retardant performance of PC is better than that of PE and PP, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) can reach 21%-24%, and the material itself can reach V-2 level flame retardant, it still cannot meet the higher requirements for flame retardant performance in special fields, and needs to be improved by adding flame retardants. Flame retardant for polycarbonate refers to additives or compounds used to improve the fire resistance of polycarbonate.
