The global market for Ferronickel was estimated to be worth US$ 17510 million in 2025 and is projected to reach US$ 24690 million, growing at a CAGR of 5.1% from 2026 to 2032.
Ferronickel is an iron-nickel ferroalloy produced primarily by the pyrometallurgical reduction and smelting of lateritic nickel ores. In this directory, the product scope includes both lower-grade Nickel Pig Iron, generally containing less than 15% nickel, and conventional ferronickel with a higher nickel content. The balance of the alloy is mainly iron, together with controlled amounts of carbon, silicon, chromium, sulfur and phosphorus. Ferronickel can be supplied as molten metal, granules, shot, ingots or lumps and is principally used as a nickel-bearing raw material in stainless steel and other alloy-steel production. Refined nickel, nickel matte, mixed hydroxide precipitate, nickel sulfate and nickel ore are excluded. In 2025, global Ferronickel production reached approximately 19100 K MT.
Stainless steel production remains the fundamental source of demand for Ferronickel. Nickel is used to stabilize the austenitic structure of stainless steel and improve corrosion resistance, toughness and processability. Global stainless steel melt-shop production reached approximately 64.2 million tonnes in 2025, with growth led primarily by Asia. Continued expansion in food processing equipment, chemical plants, infrastructure, transportation and consumer appliances therefore provides a stable demand base for Nickel Pig Iron and conventional Ferronickel.
The continued expansion of integrated nickel and stainless steel industrial parks in Indonesia is reshaping the supply structure. Large RKEF facilities can combine nearby laterite ore resources, captive power, molten-metal transfer and stainless steel production within the same industrial complex. This reduces transportation and remelting requirements and supports large-volume NPI production. At the same time, rapid Indonesian supply growth has placed sustained pressure on higher-cost producers in New Caledonia, Europe and other regions, causing production cuts, maintenance shutdowns and industry consolidation.
Energy consumption and carbon intensity are becoming more important competitive factors. RKEF and electric-furnace ferronickel production require substantial electricity and reducing agents, meaning that electricity source, ore grade, furnace efficiency and slag handling have a direct effect on production cost and carbon footprint. Producers are therefore investing in higher-efficiency kilns and furnaces, renewable or lower-carbon electricity, waste-heat recovery, slag utilization and product-carbon traceability. Lower-carbon ferronickel may achieve stronger acceptance in markets where stainless steel customers are required to reduce supply-chain emissions.
