Description

The global market for Onboard Carbon Capture and Storage System was estimated to be worth US$ 0.87 million in 2024 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 4.17 million by 2031 with a CAGR of 20.7% during the forecast period 2025-2031.

A onboard carbon capture and storage system (CCS) is a device or complete system installed onboard a ship that captures, separates, and stores carbon dioxide (CO₂) from exhaust gases during operation, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving carbon reduction goals in the maritime sector. Shipboard carbon capture technology based on traditional energy power systems generally uses chemical absorption to capture exhaust gases. The principle is to absorb and release CO₂ through temperature changes in an absorbent liquid, thereby separating and capturing CO₂ from the exhaust gases. The system primarily consists of four processes: CO₂ capture, separation, compression and liquefaction, and storage and unloading. First, the ship's exhaust gas enters an absorber to capture CO₂. The captured CO₂ is then separated in a separation tower. The separated CO₂ gas is compressed, liquefied, and purified. The purified and liquefied CO₂ is then transferred to storage containers. The captured and stored liquid CO₂ can be directly transferred to CO₂ carriers at ports or unloaded at specialized ports for use as raw materials for chemicals such as alkalis and alcohols, or for geological and bioremediation applications. It can also be converted into dry ice and stored on the seabed in designated sea areas. The core advantage of marine carbon capture systems (CCSs) is their ability to significantly reduce CO₂ emissions without switching fuels, making them an important transitional technology for traditional fuel-powered ships to achieve short-term emissions reduction targets. With the increasingly stringent International Maritime Organization (IMO) Carbon Intensity Index (CII) and greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, these systems are attracting significant attention from shipyards, shipowners, and energy companies. In the future, they are expected to form a key component of marine green power technology, alongside low-carbon fuels, exhaust gas purification, and energy management systems.

Onboard Carbon Capture and Storage System Market Size(US$)

M= millions and B=billions

QYRLogo
The main components of a shipboard CCS typically include an exhaust gas bypass valve, CO₂ blower, heat exchanger, absorption unit, separation unit, compression unit, refrigeration unit, liquefaction unit, storage unit, gas detection and monitoring system, and wastewater treatment and control system. For different ship types and their operational characteristics, the required capture capacity of the CCS must be comprehensively considered, the required CO₂ storage tank volume must be calculated, and different layout options can be flexibly adopted.
