MLCC External Electrode Paste is a thick-film conductive cermet paste used to form the external terminations of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). It typically consists of silver (Ag), silver–palladium (Ag–Pd) or copper (Cu) metal powders combined with glass frit and an organic vehicle containing polymer binders, solvents and rheology modifiers. The paste is applied to the chip ends—by dipping, array coating or printing—on sintered MLCC bodies, and then fired to create adherent, solderable termination layers that provide electrical connection to the buried internal electrodes, mechanical anchoring to the ceramic body, and a suitable base for subsequent Ni barrier and Sn/SnAg plating.
Demand for MLCC external electrode paste is primarily driven by the continuous upgrade of termination structures toward miniaturization, high reliability and robust solderability. As end applications expand from traditional consumer electronics into automotive, industrial, 5G communications and power/server systems, requirements for bend strength, thermal shock resistance and long lifetime are steadily increasing.
