Carbon dioxide is a commonly used supercritical fluid and is widely used because of its low cost, easy availability, and nontoxicity. In SFC systems, supercritical carbon dioxide is usually mixed with a liquid modifier (such as methanol or acetonitrile) to adjust the polarity of the mobile phase to achieve effective separation of different compounds.
