N-Acetylglucosamine (NAG or GlcNAc) is a naturally occurring amino monosaccharide and an important structural unit of chitin, glycoproteins, glycolipids and multiple glycosaminoglycans. Commercial material is generally supplied as a white crystalline powder and can be produced through enzymatic hydrolysis of shellfish-derived chitin, acetylation of glucosamine, or microbial fermentation. Compared with conventional glucosamine salts, NAG is present in an acetylated form and offers good water solubility and formulation flexibility. It is mainly used in functional foods, dietary supplements, joint-health products, oral beauty and skin-care formulations, with expanding use in biomedical, animal-nutrition and agricultural applications. In 2025, global N-Acetylglucosamine production reached approximately 10,230 tons.
Demand for joint health, sports nutrition and healthy aging is moving N-acetylglucosamine beyond a narrow glucosamine derivative into a higher-value functional amino sugar.
