Methyl Orange (CAS 547-58-0, C.I. 13025, Acid Orange 52) is a synthetic azo compound primarily commercialized as an acid-base indicator and analytical reagent. It changes from red under strongly acidic conditions to yellow as pH increases, with a typical transition interval around pH 3.1–4.4. Commercial solid products are supplied as orange-to-yellow powders or crystals in indicator, analytical, ACS and other reagent grades. Ready-to-use dilute indicator solutions are excluded from production tonnage to avoid counting the carrier water as Methyl Orange. Textile use is currently limited. The upstream industry includes sulfanilic acid, sodium nitrite, N,N-dimethylaniline, acids, alkalis, process water and packaging materials. Midstream manufacturers undertake diazotization, azo coupling, neutralization, crystallization, purification, drying, quality testing and reagent packaging. International suppliers include Thermo Fisher Scientific, Merck/Supelco, TCI, SRL and Loba Chemie, while Chinese and Indian producers contribute a substantial share of bulk physical supply. Downstream users include analytical laboratories, environmental and water-testing laboratories, universities, industrial quality-control laboratories, pharmaceutical and chemical testing facilities and selected histology applications.
Methyl Orange is a mature, low-volume analytical chemical rather than a conventional high-volume dye market. Demand is anchored by titration, laboratory education, quality control, water and environmental analysis and selected histological applications. The extremely low concentration required in analytical procedures limits physical consumption even though the compound is used by a very large number of laboratories.
The principal structural constraint is substitution. Automated titrators, electronic pH measurement and alternative indicators reduce the need for manual color-endpoint detection, while Methyl Orange's limited textile performance prevents the product from developing into a major industrial dye outlet. Growth is therefore likely to remain in the low-single-digit range.The market will continue to have unusually wide pricing dispersion. Chinese and Indian manufacturers are well positioned in bulk and standard indicator grades, whereas Merck, Thermo Fisher and TCI retain substantial value in certified analytical grades, documentation, traceability and small-pack global laboratory distribution. Consequently, branded suppliers can hold a much larger revenue share than their share of physical tonnage.
