A CNC External Grinding Machine, also commonly referred to as a CNC Cylindrical Grinding Machine or CNC External Cylindrical Grinder, is a precision machine tool that uses numerical control to grind the external cylindrical surfaces, stepped diameters, tapers, end faces and contoured profiles of shafts, sleeves, discs and other rotational components. The X-axis generally controls radial wheel infeed while the Z-axis controls longitudinal movement, with CNC coordination of the workhead, wheelhead, dressing system and grinding cycles enabling automated rough grinding, finish grinding, spark-out and dimensional compensation.
