The global XRT Ore Sorter market size was US$ 166 million in 2025 and is forecast to reach a readjusted size of US$ 325 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 10.1% during the forecast period 2026-2032.
XRT Ore Sorter is a sensor-based particle sorting system used in mining and mineral processing to inspect individual ore and mineral particles after crushing, screening and controlled material presentation. It uses X-ray transmission technology to measure differences in X-ray attenuation through each particle and analyzes density-related characteristics, effective atomic number, internal mineral distribution and structural features to distinguish valuable ore from low-grade material and gangue. The system typically integrates feeding and material presentation equipment, a conveying or particle transport system, X-ray sources, detector arrays, image acquisition and data-processing units, sorting controls and high-speed pneumatic ejection mechanisms to detect, locate, classify and separate particles continuously. XRT ore sorters are used for run-of-mine pre-concentration, early waste-rock rejection, low-grade ore upgrading, stabilization of processing-plant feed, retreatment of historical stockpiles and recovery of high-value minerals. Because XRT classification primarily relies on internal X-ray absorption and transmission characteristics rather than surface appearance, it is comparatively less dependent on color, texture, dust and surface contamination and is particularly suitable for mineral feeds where valuable components and gangue exhibit distinguishable differences in density or X-ray attenuation.
MARKET TRENDS
MARKET SEGMENTATION
MARKET DYNAMICS
Drivers
Declining head grades, rising stripping ratios and higher grinding costs are encouraging mining companies to remove barren material earlier in the process. Because crushing and grinding account for a substantial share of mineral-processing energy use, rejecting waste before the grinding circuit can reduce power, water, reagent and tailings-management requirements while increasing the effective capacity of an existing concentrator. XRT is particularly attractive where valuable minerals or associated sulphides exhibit a measurable atomic-density contrast with the surrounding gangue. Commercial adoption is also being supported by larger industrial references: the Pilgangoora lithium operation commissioned a sorting installation exceeding 1,000 tonnes per hour, while Chinese mines have deployed multiple XRT units for lead-zinc, antimony, iron, phosphate and other ores. Increasing pressure to improve resource utilization, reduce tailings generation and extend mine life therefore remains the principal structural driver of the market.
Restraints
XRT is not universally applicable to every ore body. Commercial performance depends on sufficient liberation at the selected particle size and a consistent relationship between X-ray attenuation features and economically valuable mineralization. Ores with highly disseminated valuable minerals, weak density contrast or excessive particle overlap may require finer crushing, more complex algorithms or additional sensors, which can reduce throughput and weaken project economics. The main machine also requires properly designed crushing, screening, material presentation, compressed-air, dust-control and product-handling systems; consequently, total installed investment can be substantially higher than the price of the sorter alone. Adoption may also be delayed by lengthy bulk-sample testing, ore variability studies and integration engineering, particularly where mines are reluctant to modify an operating plant without a clearly demonstrated recovery and payback case.
Opportunities
The largest incremental opportunity is expected to come from low-grade resources and historical stockpiles that were previously uneconomic to process. XRT can recover mineralized particles from marginal ore, old waste-rock dumps and intermediate products while limiting the volume sent to energy-intensive downstream operations. Critical minerals represent another important opportunity, including lithium, tungsten, tin, nickel, cobalt, rare-earth-bearing ores and associated polymetallic deposits. Expansion into smaller particle sizes increases the addressable share of each mined tonne, while XRT combined with visible-light, laser or spectroscopic sensing can improve performance where density information alone is insufficient. Additional opportunities are emerging in industrial minerals, mine-waste valorization and high-value final recovery, including diamonds and gemstone-bearing material.
Challenges
The industry must manage ore-specific algorithm development, variable feed moisture, particle overlap, detector calibration, valve wear and compressed-air consumption under continuous mining conditions. Performance established during laboratory testing may decline when feed size distribution, mineralogy or surface moisture changes at full scale. Suppliers must therefore provide mineralogical testwork, representative bulk trials, commissioning support and continuous model optimization rather than treating the sorter as a standardized stand-alone machine. Radiation shielding, equipment certification and site safety management also raise technical and regulatory requirements. A further commercial challenge is comparability: reported equipment prices may refer to the XRT main machine, a containerized module or a complete sorting plant, producing significant differences in apparent average selling prices.
INDUSTRY CHAIN ANALYSIS
The upstream supply chain includes industrial X-ray tubes and generators, scintillator or semiconductor detector arrays, imaging electronics, high-speed data-acquisition components, industrial computers, conveyor belts, wear-resistant liners, pneumatic valves, compressors, dust-control equipment and steel structures. Detector resolution, X-ray penetration, valve response time and algorithm performance are the main components affecting sorting accuracy and system cost. Midstream suppliers design the material-presentation system, radiation enclosure, sensing architecture, classification software and ejection system, and then integrate these components with feed preparation and product-handling equipment. Downstream customers include integrated mining companies, independent mine operators, mineral-processing companies and specialized diamond or industrial-mineral producers. Value creation increasingly extends beyond equipment manufacturing to ore characterization, pilot testing, algorithm training, process design, installation, remote diagnostics, software upgrades and long-term service support.
SEGMENT INSIGHTS
By rated feed particle size, the market is divided into ≤60 mm, >60–150 mm and >150 mm machines. The ≤60 mm segment benefits from the expansion of fine-particle XRT and typically requires higher detector resolution, more precise particle positioning and faster ejection. The >60–150 mm segment represents a major industrial pre-concentration range because it balances mineral liberation, X-ray penetration and high throughput. Machines rated above 150 mm serve coarse waste rejection and selected high-tonnage applications but face greater X-ray penetration and material-handling requirements.
By energy detection method, single-energy machines use one principal X-ray response to classify particles, while dual-energy machines compare two energy responses to reduce the influence of particle thickness and provide more stable density or effective-atomic-number information. Dual-energy systems represent the mainstream configuration for demanding industrial ore applications, although single-energy units remain relevant where the separation contrast is strong and cost sensitivity is higher. By configuration, standalone machines rely primarily on XRT images, whereas multi-sensor machines combine XRT with visible-light, laser, NIR, SWIR, XRF or other signals. Standalone XRT remains the larger installed category, but multi-sensor systems are expected to grow faster as mines seek to classify complex ores using both internal and surface characteristics.
DOWNSTREAM MARKET OPPORTUNITIES
Non-ferrous and critical metal ores provide the broadest medium-term opportunity because copper, lead-zinc, tin, tungsten, molybdenum, antimony, lithium and polymetallic mines frequently face declining grades and high grinding costs. Ferrous and ferroalloy ores offer demand for dry pre-concentration of iron, manganese and chromium-bearing material, while industrial and non-metallic minerals use XRT to remove silica, carbonate and other impurities before flotation, calcination or chemical processing. Precious-metal applications generally depend on dense sulphide associations or sufficiently concentrated mineral inclusions, making testwork particularly important. Diamond and gemstone recovery forms a specialized high-value niche within the broader other-applications category. Across these markets, the strongest opportunities are in new concentrator designs, brownfield debottlenecking, low-grade stockpile retreatment and the conversion of waste rock into reusable aggregate or mineral feed.
REGIONAL INSIGHTS

Fastest-Growing Region: Asia Pacific
Asia Pacific is assessed as the largest market by unit shipments, supported by a broad Chinese manufacturing base, expanding domestic deployment and large mining projects in Australia. HPY Sorting reports more than 260 Classic XRT machines operating in China, while other Chinese suppliers have commercialized XRT equipment across ferrous, non-ferrous, critical and industrial mineral applications. Australia is an important high-value market because its large, mechanized hard-rock mines can support multi-machine sorting plants, as demonstrated by the Pilgangoora lithium installation.

Others
Europe remains the principal center for high-end XRT product development and international exports, led by established suppliers in Germany, Norway, Italy and Poland. Russia has a specialized position in diamond and radiometric mineral sorting through Bourevestnik. Africa represents an important market for diamonds, gold, base metals and industrial minerals, although projects are often dependent on imported equipment and regional engineering partners. Latin America offers growth potential in copper, tin, gold, silver and polymetallic operations, while North American demand is expected to develop around critical-mineral projects, mine-life extension and stockpile retreatment.
COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE ANALYSIS
The competitive landscape combines established global sensor-sorting specialists, X-ray technology companies and rapidly expanding Chinese mining-equipment manufacturers. TOMRA Mining and STEINERT hold the strongest international positions through broad XRT portfolios, global testing and service networks, and references across large industrial mines. Bourevestnik has a differentiated position in diamond and radiometric sorting, while Comex competes through single-energy, dual-energy, high-definition and multi-sensor XRT configurations. SGM Magnetics supplies XRT across both mining and recycling, giving it a broad technology and manufacturing platform. Among Chinese suppliers, HPY Sorting has developed a substantial XRT installation base and a portfolio spanning conventional belt, high-throughput ring-shaped and XRT-plus-vision systems. Honesort, Meiteng Technology, AMD Sorting, NUCTECH and Mingde Optoelectronic are strengthening competition through localized engineering, AI classification, broader feed-size coverage and lower equipment costs, while HOT Mining and LONGi Magnet combine sorting equipment with wider mineral-processing capabilities. allmineral is a recent entrant with its allsort dual-energy XRT platform and should be viewed as an emerging competitor rather than an established 2025 market leader. Competition is increasingly determined by application testwork, recovery performance, installed-system reliability, software capability and lifecycle service rather than by the price of the sorter alone.
