The portable wire rope flaw detector is a field instrument designed for the non-destructive testing (NDT) of in-service ferromagnetic wire ropes. It typically comprises an openable/closable magnetization and detection head, permanent magnet or electromagnetic excitation components, a magnetic sensor array, an odometer encoder, a data acquisition terminal, a battery, and analysis software. Utilizing the magnetic flux method, magnetic flux leakage (MFL) method, or a combination of both, the device subjects the wire rope to longitudinal saturation magnetization to identify localized flaws (LF)—such as broken wires, corrosion/pitting, wear, fatigue, and structural deformation—and to measure the loss of metallic cross-sectional area (LMA) caused by corrosion and wear. It is primarily used to assess the internal condition of magnetic wire ropes in applications including mine hoists (coal and metal mines), port and ship cranes, tower and crawler cranes, elevators, passenger ropeways and ski lifts, oil drilling rigs, offshore engineering lifting equipment, bridge suspension and stay cables, electric traction systems, and large-scale industrial hoisting systems. The upstream supply chain includes NdFeB permanent magnets, electromagnetic coils, magnetic yokes and magnetically permeable materials, magnetic sensors (Hall/GMR/TMR), signal conditioning and A/D conversion chips, MCUs or FPGAs, encoders, roller guide mechanisms, lithium batteries, industrial connectors, and protective housings. The midstream sector encompasses magnetic circuit and detection head design, sensor array configuration, LF/LMA signal decoupling, calibration testing, defect sample databases, algorithm software, and final assembly, certification, and training. The downstream sector consists of operators in mining, ports, lifting equipment, elevators, ropeways, offshore engineering, and bridge infrastructure.
In terms of regional distribution, China is a key producer and demand market within the Asia-Pacific region; meanwhile, European countries—specifically Germany, Poland, the UK, Italy, and the Alpine region—have mature applications in sectors such as cableways, hoisting, offshore engineering, and specialized inspection.
