A Dual Flow Tray is a gas–liquid mass-transfer internal installed in distillation, absorption and stripping columns. Its main structure is a continuous perforated tray deck without downcomers, outlet weirs or movable valve components. Rising vapor and descending liquid pass countercurrently through the same tray openings. Under the combined effects of vapor momentum and liquid gravity, periodic bubbling, jetting, droplet dispersion and liquid-phase renewal occur around the openings, promoting intensive gas–liquid contact for mass transfer or heat exchange. Since nearly the entire column cross-section can be utilized as an active flow and contacting area, the Dual Flow Tray features a simple structure, large effective mass-transfer area, high processing capacity, relatively low pressure drop, and comparatively low capital and maintenance costs.
A Dual Flow Tray is generally custom-engineered through hydraulic design based on column diameter, vapor and liquid loads, fluid properties and allowable pressure drop. Key design parameters include hole diameter, open area, hole pitch, tray thickness and tray spacing. The tray may use a perforated-plate or grid-type structure and may be fabricated from carbon steel, stainless steel, corrosion-resistant alloys or thermoplastics. Its downcomer-free, valve-free and relatively open construction avoids valve sticking and reduces the risk of downcomer blockage, making it well suited to fouling, polymerizing and solids-containing services. However, because vapor and liquid share the same openings, its performance is relatively sensitive to changes in operating load. Weeping may occur at low vapor rates, while entrainment or flooding may occur at high loads. Its operating range is therefore generally narrower than that of conventional valve trays and sieve trays equipped with downcomers.
