Market Snapshot
Source: Secondary research, interviews with experts, and QYResearch analysis
The global market for Electronic Waste Recycling was estimated to be worth US$ 24627 million in 2025 and is projected to reach US$ 37482 million, growing at a CAGR of 6.2% from 2026 to 2032.
Electronic Waste Recycling refers to professional services for the collection, transportation, sorting, testing, data destruction, refurbishment, dismantling, material separation, treatment and recycling of discarded or end-of-life electrical and electronic equipment (EEE). Typical waste streams include computers, servers, smartphones, telecommunications equipment, consumer electronics, household appliances, displays, printed circuit boards, industrial electronics and other electrically powered devices.
The service chain generally starts with collection and reverse logistics, followed by sorting and evaluation to determine whether equipment or components can be reused or refurbished. Non-reusable products are dismantled or shredded, after which metals, plastics, glass and other materials are separated. High-value fractions such as printed circuit boards may undergo pyrometallurgical and/or hydrometallurgical processing to recover copper, gold, silver, palladium and other valuable metals. Hazardous substances are separately treated to meet environmental requirements. For enterprise IT equipment, the service scope frequently also includes IT asset disposition (ITAD), secure data erasure or destruction, asset tracking, resale and compliance reporting.
Market Drivers
1. Rapid Growth of Electronic Waste Generation
Increasing penetration of smartphones, computers, servers, appliances, IoT devices and other electronic products, combined with relatively short replacement cycles, is continuously expanding the amount of end-of-life electronic equipment. The large gap between e-waste generation and formal recycling represents substantial potential for expansion of professional recycling services.
2. Regulations and Extended Producer Responsibility
Environmental regulation is one of the strongest structural drivers of the market. Governments increasingly require producers, retailers and waste handlers to establish formal collection and recycling channels. The European Union's WEEE Directive requires separate collection and proper treatment of electrical and electronic waste and establishes collection, recovery and recycling targets. Japan's Home Appliance Recycling Law similarly assigns collection responsibilities to retailers and recycling responsibilities to manufacturers.
China is also strengthening formal recycling infrastructure. Policies issued by nine government departments called for expansion of collection networks, large recycling enterprises and online-to-offline recycling models, while China's GB/T 45070-2024 Specification of Take-back on Waste Electrical and Electronic Product took effect on June 1, 2025. These policies favor licensed, industrial-scale recycling operators over informal recycling channels.
3. Increasing Value of Secondary and Critical Raw Materials
Electronic waste contains significant quantities of copper, aluminum, gold, silver, palladium, tin and other metals. Increasing metal prices, supply-chain uncertainty and geopolitical concerns are therefore making e-waste an increasingly important urban mine. Electronics recycling can reduce dependence on virgin ores and provide local secondary raw-material supply for electronics, semiconductor and other manufacturing industries.
4. Data Security and Growth of Enterprise ITAD
Rapid expansion of cloud computing, data centers, enterprise IT infrastructure and corporate device replacement is creating another high-value segment: IT Asset Disposition. Enterprises require not only recycling but also certified data erasure, physical destruction of storage media, asset tracking, remarketing and audit documentation. This makes enterprise ITAD generally a higher-value service than simple commodity-based e-waste collection.
