An open-frame AC-DC power supply is a complete internal power-conversion unit that converts alternating-current mains input into one or more regulated direct-current outputs without a fully enclosed protective housing. Its rectification, power-factor-correction, high-frequency switching, isolation, control and filtering components are assembled on an exposed printed circuit board intended for integration into the enclosure of finished equipment. Most products accept a universal 85–264 VAC input and provide standard outputs such as 3.3 VDC, 5 VDC, 12 VDC, 24 VDC or 48 VDC, with rated power extending from several watts to more than 1,000 W. Open-frame construction provides compact dimensions, high power density, low weight, flexible cooling and competitive cost. The final equipment manufacturer must provide mechanical protection, grounding, insulation clearances, airflow and system-level EMC compliance. Typical functions include galvanic isolation, voltage regulation, power-factor correction, standby output, remote control and protection against short circuits, overcurrent, overvoltage and overheating.

The upstream segment of the open-frame AC-DC power supply industry includes power semiconductors, control ICs, magnetic components, capacitors, resistors, printed circuit boards, optocouplers, connectors and thermal-management materials. Critical components comprise silicon, silicon-carbide or gallium-nitride MOSFETs, bridge rectifiers, PFC controllers, PWM and LLC controllers, transformers, inductors, electrolytic and film capacitors, heat sinks and cooling fans. Midstream manufacturers conduct topology and transformer design, PCB layout, surface-mount assembly, magnetic-component production, firmware development, thermal optimization, final assembly and reliability testing. Products are commonly designed around 2 × 3, 2 × 4, 3 × 5 and 4 × 6-inch footprints and certified for industrial, information-technology, household or medical equipment. Sales channels include direct OEM supply, authorized distributors, electronic-component platforms and customized power-solution providers. Downstream manufacturers integrate the products into industrial controllers, medical devices, communication equipment, displays, test instruments, security systems, household appliances and embedded computers. The end-equipment manufacturer remains responsible for enclosure protection, grounding, insulation distance, airflow, electromagnetic compatibility and final-system safety certification.
