An Ultrastable Optical Cavity is a high-finesse Fabry–Pérot optical resonator composed of two ultra-high-reflectivity cavity mirrors and a low-thermal-expansion cavity spacer. When laser light enters the cavity, only frequencies satisfying the cavity resonance condition can constructively interfere and build up strongly inside the cavity. Any deviation of the laser frequency from the resonance point causes a corresponding change in the reflected or transmitted optical signal. The frequency-locking system detects this change and adjusts the laser so that its frequency continuously tracks the cavity resonance. Because variations in cavity length directly cause shifts in the reference frequency, Ultrastable Optical Cavity typically uses low-expansion materials such as ULE glass or single-crystal silicon, together with ultra-high-reflectivity coatings, vacuum packaging, precision temperature control, and vibration-insensitive support structures. These features enable high finesse, low thermal noise, low vibration sensitivity, and low frequency drift.
The upstream industry mainly includes low-expansion optical materials, superpolished mirror substrates, ultra-high-reflectivity optical coatings, vacuum components, temperature-control devices, and precision mechanical structures. In downstream applications, Ultrastable Optical Cavity is typically integrated with narrow-linewidth lasers, photodetectors, optical modulators, and laser frequency-locking controllers to form an ultrastable laser system.
