A pulse width modulator (PWM) is a circuit device that converts analog signal levels into constant-amplitude pulse-width modulated signals. Its core value lies in using digital signals to efficiently and precisely control analog circuits, achieving digital encoding of analog signal levels. By adjusting the duty cycle of the pulse—the percentage of the total cycle when the signal is at a high level—the PWM can effectively change the average output voltage or power, thus achieving precise load regulation with minimal power loss.

In the field of power management, it is the core control method for switching power supplies, DC-DC converters, and UPS; in the field of motor control, it is used to precisely regulate motor speed and torque, and is widely used in industrial automation, robotics, and electric vehicles; in the consumer electronics field, from LED lighting dimming and home appliance control to Class D audio amplifiers, PWM technology is indispensable. Pulse width modulators are usually implemented in the form of application-specific integrated circuits, such as classic chips like the TL494 and UC3843, which drive power switching devices (such as MOSFETs or IGBTs) by generating controlled pulse width modulation pulses.
