Reaction calorimeter is a professional instrument for measuring heat changes during chemical reactions. It is mainly used in scientific research and industrial production. Reaction calorimeter can accurately measure and record this heat change, thereby providing important information about the thermodynamic properties of the reaction, such as reaction heat, activation energy, reaction rate, etc.

The working principle of the reaction calorimeter is based on the principle of thermal balance. It calculates the thermal effect of the reaction by accurately controlling and monitoring the energy exchange between the reaction system and the environment. According to different application requirements and design features, reaction calorimeters can be divided into various types, such as Isothermal RC, Adiabatic RC, Accelerating Rate RC, Microcalorimeter, etc.

Reaction calorimeters continuously measure the heat released or absorbed by a chemical reaction by simulating the feeding, stirring, temperature, pressure, and reflux conditions in a laboratory reactor. This data is used to obtain key parameters such as reaction enthalpy, exothermic rate, heat accumulation, cooling requirements, and runaway risk. It primarily serves process development, safety evaluation, and scale-up production in pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, agrochemicals, and specialty materials. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) process safety management rules require companies to understand reactivity, thermal stability, process safety temperature and pressure boundaries, and the consequences of deviations from normal conditions, prompting enhanced calorimetric testing for high-exothermic, semi-batch feeding, and high-pressure reaction projects before pilot-scale production.

Reaction calorimetric data can be combined with online infrared, particle size, pH, and pressure analysis to help companies establish process design space, control strategies, and traceable scale-up data. Product technology will evolve towards miniaturization, modularization, and automation: small-capacity equipment will be used for early route screening and to reduce the consumption of high-value raw materials, while large-capacity systems will simulate pilot-scale and production conditions; heat flow methods, power compensation methods, and algorithms that do not require frequent calibration will be gradually integrated to improve testing efficiency.
