It is a key precursor chemical for high-nickel ternary precursors and cathode materials. In terms of form, battery grade nickel sulfate is mainly supplied to the market in two types: crystalline powder and solution. It can also be divided into the primary route, which is mainly based on sulfide ore and laterite nickel ore, and the recycled route, which is based on the production of scrap materials and waste batteries. The two types of products are gradually coexisting in the downstream cathode system.

Battery-grade nickel sulfate is a crucial nickel source for ternary cathode precursors, and the market is shifting from a "one-way drive by new energy vehicles" to a coexistence of "demand growth, technological differentiation, and ample supply." The most significant change on the supply side is the rapid expansion of the Indonesian "latite nickel ore-HPAL-MHP-nickel sulfate" industrial chain. The combination of low-cost resources and China's hydrometallurgical and ternary precursor manufacturing capabilities is continuously lowering the industry cost curve, while simultaneously creating a temporary oversupply. IEA data shows that nickel prices fell by approximately 10%-20% in 2024, squeezing the processing fees and profit margins of nickel sulfate producers, with high-cost raw material sourcing companies and single-smelting enterprises facing even greater pressure.
