A Reusable Logistics Packaging Tracking System is an integrated hardware and software solution used to identify, locate and manage reusable transport packaging such as pallets, crates, totes, roll cages, racks, drums and intermediate bulk containers throughout repeated logistics cycles.

The system may use barcodes, QR codes, passive RFID, BLE, UWB, GPS, cellular communication or ambient IoT technology. Core functions include asset registration, dispatch and return records, inventory visibility, dwell-time analysis, cycle counting, loss alerts, packaging balances and system integration.

The scope includes tracking tags and sensors supplied as part of a system, readers, gateways, cloud or on-premise software, data connectivity, implementation and directly related subscription revenue.

Reusable packaging bodies, general pooling fees, cleaning, repair, reverse logistics, disposable shipment trackers and general warehouse-management systems are excluded.

The 2025 ASP is US$32,000 per unit, global sales volume is approximately 42,500 units, and the estimated average gross margin is approximately 44%.

The upstream chain includes RFID chips, durable labels, BLE and UWB modules, GPS and cellular modules, batteries, antennas, readers, gateways and cloud infrastructure. Midstream activities include tracker design, software development, asset-data configuration, reader deployment, system integration, testing and data-platform operation. Downstream users mainly include packaging poolers, manufacturers, retailers, food and beverage companies, automotive suppliers, logistics companies, pharmaceutical companies and e-commerce operators.

The market is moving from spreadsheet- and barcode-based packaging records toward automated asset-level visibility. Barcode and QR systems remain important for small or controlled loops, while RFID, BLE and ambient IoT are expanding in high-volume and multi-site packaging networks.

Reusable packaging creates value only when the asset can be returned and reused enough times. Poor visibility can cause pallets, crates and racks to remain at customer sites, become mixed with third-party assets or disappear from the network, increasing replacement purchases and emergency transportation.

Passive RFID remains one of the most scalable technologies for large packaging pools. Multiple tagged crates or pallets can be identified simultaneously at warehouse doors, production lines or vehicle-loading points without scanning each asset individually.

Active tracking is primarily used for higher-value packaging and less-controlled supply chains. BLE, GPS, cellular and LPWAN trackers provide location updates between fixed checkpoints and can generate alerts for unexpected movement, prolonged dwell time or departure from an approved route.

Ambient IoT is creating a new middle category between passive RFID and battery-powered GPS. Battery-free Bluetooth tags can provide more frequent data than traditional scan-based systems while reducing battery-replacement and maintenance requirements.

Packaging-management software is developing beyond simple quantity balances. New platforms support individual asset histories, automated rental charges, trip management, geofence transactions, condition data, customer portals and integration with ERP, WMS and transport systems. TrackOnline’s current enterprise functionality includes IoT and RFID plug-ins, automatic transfers, anomaly detection, trip management and rental calculations.

Pooling companies are integrating tracking directly into their reusable-packaging service. CHEP uses IoT-based track-and-trace solutions across reusable pallets and containers, while ORBIS SmartTrak360 provides inventory, in-transit and transaction visibility for packaging pools.

Tracking data is increasingly used for asset-pool optimization rather than only loss prevention. Companies can identify excess inventory, shortages, slow-return locations and abnormal cycle times, allowing packaging to be repositioned before production or delivery is disrupted.

Condition monitoring is expanding in food, pharmaceutical and high-value industrial supply chains. Temperature, humidity, shock, vibration, door status and fill-level data can be associated with the reusable packaging asset and the goods carried inside it.

Regulatory reporting is strengthening demand for verifiable reuse data. European reuse requirements and industry traceability rules increase the need to identify packaging, record trips and demonstrate that assets are circulating within an organized reuse system.

Food and beverage applications require large quantities of crates, pallets, trays, kegs and bulk liquid containers. These assets move through manufacturers, distributors, retailers, restaurants and cleaning centers, creating strong demand for automated receipt, return and sanitation records.

Automotive manufacturing is another major application. Customized racks, component trays and stillages are relatively expensive, and shortages can interrupt just-in-time production. Tracking systems help monitor assets across assembly plants, component suppliers and external logistics providers.
