The global Biodiesel Engine market size was US$ 790 million in 2025 and is forecast to reach a readjusted size of US$ 1139 million by 2032 with a CAGR of 5.4% during the forecast period 2026-2032.

Biodiesel Engine refers to a compression-ignition diesel engine designed, calibrated, tested or formally approved by its original equipment manufacturer to operate on specified proportions of fatty acid methyl ester biodiesel, ranging from low-level blends such as B5 and B7 to B20, B30 or B100. The product retains the basic configuration of a conventional diesel engine, including the cylinder block, cylinder head, piston and connecting-rod assembly, crankshaft, valve train, turbocharging system, cooling and lubrication systems, fuel pump, common rail, injectors, electronic control unit and exhaust aftertreatment system. Its defining attributes are the approved biodiesel blend ratio, applicable fuel standard, rated power, torque, displacement, fuel-injection architecture, emissions level, durability, cold-start performance and maintenance requirements. This study primarily covers engine units and manufacturer-controlled power platforms used in road transportation, agricultural machinery, construction and mining equipment, marine propulsion, railway traction, stationary industrial equipment and power generation. Biodiesel is used in compression-ignition engines, while the allowable blend remains dependent on the recommendations and approval conditions of each engine manufacturer.

In 2025, global biodiesel engine production reached approximately 83 k units, the average price is 9500 usd/unit.

biaoTi MARKET TRENDS

The Biodiesel Engine industry is shifting from basic tolerance of low-percentage blends toward formally validated, model-specific compatibility with B20, B30 and B100. Low-blend capability is increasingly treated as a standard fuel-flexibility characteristic, while higher-blend products require dedicated materials verification, electronic calibration, aftertreatment assessment and revised service intervals. John Deere expanded B30 approval across its Tier 4 engine portfolio in 2025, while selected Volvo, Scania, Yanmar and Everllence platforms demonstrate the progression of B100 from technical trials toward commercial road, marine and stationary-power applications. Product development is also moving toward multi-fuel-ready combustion platforms capable of supporting biodiesel alongside petroleum diesel, HVO and other lower-carbon fuels. Customers increasingly evaluate not only rated power and fuel consumption, but also permitted blend ratio, fuel-standard compliance, maintenance frequency, lifecycle emissions, regional fuel availability and the ability to switch back to conventional diesel. This favors modular engine platforms with adaptable fuel systems and software rather than dedicated single-fuel engine designs.

biaoTi MARKET DYNAMICS

drivers

Drivers

The principal driver is the need to reduce lifecycle carbon emissions from applications that remain difficult to electrify, including long-haul transport, high-load agricultural and construction machinery, marine vessels and continuous or emergency power generation. Biodiesel can be used through existing compression-ignition engine architecture, allowing fleet operators to lower fossil-fuel dependence without replacing the entire vehicle, machine or power system. B20 and lower blends can be used in many approved diesel platforms with limited or no major engine modification, supporting comparatively rapid deployment through established fuel-distribution and service networks. Government blending requirements, renewable-fuel incentives, corporate decarbonization targets and the utilization of waste oils and animal fats further reinforce demand. For engine manufacturers, extending biodiesel compatibility also provides a lower-investment pathway to improve the environmental positioning of mature diesel platforms.

restraints

Restraints

Market expansion is restrained by inconsistent biodiesel quality, differences among national fuel standards and the operational characteristics of high-FAME blends. Biodiesel has lower volumetric energy content than petroleum diesel and may present challenges related to oxidation, water absorption, microbial contamination, low-temperature flow, filter plugging and material compatibility. B100 contains approximately 93% of the energy of an equivalent volume of petroleum diesel, while the difference is substantially smaller for B20. Higher blends may require shorter oil-change and filter-replacement intervals, specialized storage practices and closer monitoring of injectors and aftertreatment systems. OEM approval is normally model-, market- and production-year-specific, limiting the ability of buyers to treat all diesel engines as interchangeable Biodiesel Engine products. Fuel availability and price competitiveness also vary by region and feedstock cycle.

opportunities

Opportunities

The strongest opportunities are found in captive fleets and high-utilization assets with centralized refueling, predictable duty cycles and measurable decarbonization requirements. Municipal buses, logistics fleets, agricultural equipment, port machinery, marine vessels and standby or prime-power installations can adopt approved biodiesel blends without waiting for full charging or hydrogen infrastructure. B100 creates a differentiated opportunity in heavy-duty engines where battery weight, charging time or operating range remain restrictive. The expansion of B30 approval across newer engine portfolios and the commercial availability of B100-certified truck and marine platforms indicate room for higher-blend product lines, dedicated fuel packages and application-specific service contracts. Emerging opportunities also include engines optimized for waste-oil-derived biodiesel, integrated fuel-quality monitoring, adaptive injection calibration and digital maintenance systems that respond to actual blend ratio and operating conditions.

challenges

Challenges

The industry faces long-term competition from battery-electric powertrains, fuel cells, renewable diesel, natural gas, biomethane and hybrid systems. Renewable diesel and HVO can often offer easier compatibility with existing fuel infrastructure, while electrification is gaining regulatory and economic advantages in light-duty and short-cycle applications. Biodiesel Engine manufacturers must therefore demonstrate that higher-blend operation delivers reliable performance and verifiable lifecycle benefits without creating excessive maintenance costs. Sustainability certification of feedstocks is another major challenge because the environmental value of biodiesel depends on land-use effects, agricultural inputs, waste-oil traceability and production energy. Regional differences in ASTM, EN and national fuel specifications complicate global product standardization. Manufacturers must also manage warranty exposure when fuel quality, storage conditions or blend labeling are outside their direct control.

biaoTi INDUSTRY CHAIN ANALYSIS

The upstream Biodiesel Engine industry begins with vegetable oils, used cooking oil, animal fats, acid oils and other lipid feedstocks. These materials are collected, pretreated and converted through esterification or transesterification into FAME biodiesel, followed by purification, additive blending, quality testing, terminal storage and blending with petroleum diesel. Fuel quality is fundamental to engine reliability, making feedstock traceability, conversion yield, oxidation stability, water control and compliance with standards such as ASTM D6751, ASTM D7467 and EN 14214 important upstream value drivers. B6 to B20 fuels are governed by dedicated blend specifications in the United States, while B100 is commonly supplied as either a finished fuel for approved applications or a blending component.

The engine supply chain covers castings and forgings, pistons, crankshafts, turbochargers, high-pressure pumps, common rails, injectors, filtration systems, FAME-resistant seals and hoses, sensors, control units and exhaust aftertreatment. Midstream manufacturers integrate these components into engine platforms and conduct fuel-system compatibility, combustion calibration, cold-start, oil-dilution, emissions and endurance validation. Downstream value is created through vehicle and machinery integration, marine propulsion packages, generator sets, fleet fuel management, authorized maintenance and replacement parts. For low-blend products, value is concentrated in platform scale and certification leverage; for B100 products, a larger share is generated by engineering validation, specialized components, application integration and service capability.

biaoTi SEGMENT INSIGHTS

By approved fuel blend, B5 and B7 engines form the basic compatibility tier and are widely embedded within conventional diesel markets. B10, B20 and B30 engines constitute the principal commercial Biodiesel Engine segment because they provide a practical balance among fuel availability, cold-weather operation, emissions-system compatibility and reduced fossil-diesel consumption. B20 is a widely used blend, while recent expansion toward B30 indicates that engine manufacturers are progressively raising approved concentrations on modern platforms. This segment benefits from a large installed base but generally commands limited product-specific premiums because compatibility is frequently incorporated into existing diesel models.

B100-compatible engines represent the most technically differentiated segment. They require stronger control over fuel materials, calibration, maintenance and operating environment, but offer the greatest potential reduction in fossil-fuel use. Commercial B100 applications are most visible in selected heavy trucks, buses, marine engines and large stationary systems, where operational routes and fuel supply can be controlled. Volvo has certified selected truck engine variants for B100, Scania offers factory-prepared B100-capable platforms, and Yanmar has approved its current EY marine engine series for B100 operation.

biaoTi DOWNSTREAM MARKET OPPORTUNITIES

Road transportation remains an important downstream opportunity, particularly for heavy trucks, buses and specialized fleets that require long range, fast refueling and high payload capacity. Agricultural and construction equipment provide another attractive market because diesel engines retain a strong installed position and machines often operate in regions with access to oilseed or waste-oil feedstocks. Marine applications offer substantial potential for B100 and other high blends, especially in inland vessels, ferries, workboats, auxiliary engines and port operations subject to emissions-reduction requirements. Stationary and emergency power systems can benefit from stored liquid fuel, rapid start capability and the possibility of decarbonizing existing generator infrastructure. Customers in these markets increasingly seek an integrated package covering approved engines, certified fuel, storage compatibility, maintenance procedures and emissions reporting rather than purchasing the engine as an isolated component.

biaoTi REGIONAL INSIGHTS

map2

Fastest-Growing Region: Asia Pacific

North America has a broad installed base of diesel-powered agricultural, construction, road and power-generation equipment, with B20 representing an established commercial blend and B30 gaining additional OEM approval. The region benefits from mature fuel standards, agricultural feedstock availability and renewable-fuel policies, although adoption differs materially by state, season and equipment class. John Deere’s expansion of B30 compatibility across Tier 4 engines illustrates the gradual extension of higher blends into mainstream non-road power systems.

Europe has stronger commercialization of B100 in selected heavy-truck, bus and marine platforms, supported by EN 14214 fuel specifications and fleet decarbonization requirements. Volvo and Scania have developed commercially available B100-capable road products, while large-engine manufacturers are expanding biofuel solutions for marine and stationary power. Asia Pacific combines large diesel-engine manufacturing capacity with growing biofuel mandates and marine decarbonization programs. Japan has advanced B100 marine-engine approval, China is progressing through B100 marine demonstration and localized engine development, and Southeast Asian markets benefit from locally available vegetable-oil feedstocks. Regional growth nevertheless depends on fuel quality consistency, infrastructure, feedstock sustainability and OEM service coverage.

biaoTi COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE ANALYSIS

The Biodiesel Engine market is characterized by established diesel-engine groups extending renewable-fuel capability across existing product architectures. Cummins, Caterpillar, Perkins, Deere, DEUTZ, Kubota and HD Hyundai Infracore compete through broad industrial and non-road engine portfolios, manufacturing scale, application engineering and dealer networks. Volvo Group, Scania, PACCAR, Daimler Truck, General Motors, Ford, FPT Industrial and Isuzu integrate biodiesel compatibility with vehicle platforms, enabling coordinated control of the engine, fuel system, emissions equipment and warranty conditions. Yanmar and Everllence hold differentiated positions in marine and large stationary engines, while Greaves Cotton, Kirloskar Oil Engines and Lister Petter address regional industrial and power-generation requirements. In China, Weichai Power and Weichai Heavy Machinery have moved beyond general diesel compatibility toward identifiable B100 marine-engine products and operating demonstrations. Competitive advantage is determined less by the ability to burn biodiesel under test conditions than by formal OEM approval, blend flexibility, emissions compliance, durability evidence, production scale, service coverage and the capacity to manage fuel-quality risk throughout the operating lifecycle.
