It has a melting point of approximately 31–33°C and appears as a pale yellow solid, a molten solid, or a liquid at room temperature; it is sparingly soluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, diethyl ether, acetone, and benzene. o-Nitrochlorobenzene is generally not used as a final functional material itself; instead, it serves as a precursor for producing various aromatic amines, phenolic ethers, and other fine chemical intermediates through reactions such as nitro group reduction and aromatic ring chlorine substitution.
The core upstream raw materials for o-nitrochlorobenzene are chlorobenzene, nitric acid, and sulfuric acid; chlorobenzene is produced via the chlorination of benzene, while a mixed acid composed of nitric and sulfuric acids is used to carry out the nitration reaction. Downstream, it is primarily processed into intermediates such as o-chloroaniline (via hydrogenation or chemical reduction), o-nitroaniline (via ammonolysis), and o-nitrophenol or o-nitroanisole (via hydrolysis or alcoholysis), which subsequently enter supply chains for dyes, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and rubber additives.
