PVD and PECVD Coating Equipment refers to vacuum-based thin-film deposition systems that use physical vapor deposition, plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition or a combination of both technologies to form functional, protective, optical, electronic or decorative films on wafers, glass, metal parts, tools, molds, optical components, flexible films and other substrates.
PVD systems physically vaporize solid coating materials through magnetron sputtering, cathodic arc, thermal evaporation, electron-beam evaporation or related processes before depositing the materials on a substrate. PECVD systems generate plasma from gaseous precursors and use the activated chemical species to form solid films, generally at lower substrate temperatures than conventional thermal CVD.
The scope includes batch, inline, cluster, roll-to-roll and hybrid PVD/PECVD systems used in semiconductors, displays, photovoltaics, optics, cutting tools, molds, automotive components, medical devices and other industrial applications. Conventional CVD-only systems, ALD-only systems, etching equipment, wet-coating equipment, coating materials, vacuum components and contract coating services are excluded.

The upstream chain includes vacuum chambers, pumps, valves, RF and DC power supplies, sputtering targets, cathode sources, gas-delivery systems, mass-flow controllers, plasma sources, heaters, cooling units, robots, sensors, control software and safety systems. Midstream activities include equipment design, vacuum-system integration, plasma-source development, process-chamber manufacturing, automation, software development, process validation, assembly and commissioning. Downstream industries mainly include semiconductor and electronics, displays, photovoltaics, tools and molds, automotive and industrial components, optics, healthcare, batteries and hydrogen energy.
PVD and PECVD are complementary rather than fully interchangeable technologies. PVD is especially suitable for metals, nitrides, carbides, conductive films, hard coatings and optical layers, while PECVD is widely used for dielectric, passivation, barrier, amorphous-silicon, silicon-nitride, silicon-oxide and carbon-based films.
PVD is generally more directional because the deposited material travels from a solid source toward the substrate. Substrate rotation, multiple cathodes, ion assistance and chamber geometry are therefore important for coating complex three-dimensional parts.
PECVD activates gaseous precursors through plasma, enabling film deposition at lower substrate temperatures than conventional thermal CVD. It can provide relatively uniform deposition and allows film stress, refractive index, electrical properties and composition to be adjusted through RF power, gas ratio, pressure and temperature.
The headline deposition rate alone cannot determine equipment performance. Film uniformity, particle control, target utilization, plasma stability, adhesion, residual stress, uptime, recipe repeatability, chamber-cleaning frequency and overall cost of ownership must be assessed together.
For industrial hard coatings, loading capacity, fixture design and the ability to coat complex tools or components are critical. For semiconductor and display applications, particle levels, wafer or glass handling, within-wafer uniformity, chamber matching and automated recipe control are more important.
PVD/PECVD hybrid systems are increasingly used when a single coating stack requires metallic adhesion layers, hard nitride layers, carbon-based layers or low-friction surface layers. Integrating multiple processes without breaking vacuum can reduce contamination and improve layer-to-layer adhesion.
Batch equipment provides flexibility for tools, molds, medical components and decorative parts. Inline equipment offers higher throughput for glass, panels, bipolar plates and other large-volume products. Cluster systems are used when multiple deposition, cleaning and pre-treatment steps must be integrated under controlled vacuum conditions.
Target utilization is a major cost factor for sputtering equipment, especially when using expensive metals. Cathode design, magnetic-field control and target shape directly affect material utilization, deposition rate and coating uniformity.
PECVD equipment requires more complex gas delivery and exhaust treatment than many PVD systems. Gas chemistry, chamber-wall deposition and cleaning cycles affect uptime, film contamination and operating cost.
Equipment demand is supported by semiconductor capacity expansion, advanced packaging, OLED and high-resolution displays, high-efficiency solar cells, electric vehicles, hydrogen bipolar plates, precision tools, medical components and high-performance optical products. Public market analysis identifies electronics, automotive, healthcare and cutting tools as important PVD equipment applications.
