String-Level PV Monitoring Device refers to DC-side electronic hardware that directly measures the electrical output of individual photovoltaic strings and transmits the measured data to a data logger, plant controller or SCADA system.
The market includes standalone measurement boards, integrated string monitoring units, modular master-slave systems and wired, PLC or wireless retrofit devices. Complete combiner boxes, inverter-integrated monitoring, software platforms, module-level power electronics and testing instruments are excluded.
The 2025 benchmark ASP is US$860 per unit, global sales volume is approximately 520.930k units, and the modeled average gross margin is approximately 31%.
The upstream industry chain includes shunt resistors, Hall-effect sensors, magnetic cores, voltage dividers, isolation components, microcontrollers, communication chips, connectors, printed circuit boards and industrial power supplies. The midstream includes circuit design, sensor integration, firmware development, calibration, communication configuration, environmental testing and assembly. The downstream mainly includes ground-mounted, rooftop, floating and other dedicated photovoltaic installations.
The product is evolving from basic current-only measurement toward integrated monitoring of string current, bus voltage, cabinet temperature, surge-protection status and disconnector status.
Higher-power and bifacial modules are increasing string operating currents, while utility-scale systems are increasingly designed around 1,500 V DC architectures. Monitoring hardware therefore requires wider current ranges, improved electrical isolation, lower temperature drift and stronger surge resistance. Current products already support configurations of up to 32 strings, 50 A per string and 1,500 V DC.
RS485 and Modbus remain widely used because of their mature integration with plant SCADA systems. PLC reduces the need for separate communication cables, while wireless mesh and LoRaWAN configurations are increasingly used for retrofit projects and sites where communication cabling is difficult.
The expansion of string inverters limits the addressable market for independent monitoring devices because many string inverters already measure their individual DC inputs. Independent devices remain more important in central-inverter plants, combiner-box architectures, older power stations and projects requiring monitoring independent of the inverter.
