Microgrid Protection Relay refers to a digital protective relay or protection-and-control IED installed at a microgrid point of common coupling, feeder, distributed-energy interface or protected electrical asset. It detects abnormal current, voltage, frequency, power or impedance conditions and issues trip, block or reclose commands to circuit breakers.
The scope includes PCC, intertie, feeder, generator, transformer and bus protection relays actually supplied to microgrid projects. Microgrid controllers, EMS platforms, meters, breakers, instrument transformers, testing equipment and engineering services are excluded.
The 2025 benchmark ASP is US$3,900 per unit, global sales volume is approximately 107.179k units, and the modeled average gross margin is approximately 40%.
The upstream industry chain includes current and voltage input components, isolation devices, processors, communication chips, displays, power supplies, relays and printed circuit boards. The midstream includes hardware design, protection-algorithm development, firmware configuration, calibration, communication integration, environmental testing and certification. The downstream covers utility and community microgrids, commercial and industrial facilities, campuses, critical infrastructure and remote power systems.
Microgrid protection differs from conventional radial distribution protection because the same network may operate in both grid-connected and islanded modes. Fault-current magnitude, direction and available generation can change substantially after the point of common coupling is opened.
Inverter-based resources usually provide lower and more tightly controlled fault current than synchronous generators. Traditional time-overcurrent coordination may therefore lose sensitivity or selectivity, especially during islanded operation.
PCC protection remains a core function. Relays commonly evaluate voltage, frequency, rate of change of frequency, directional power and synchronism conditions to separate the microgrid from the utility or supervise reconnection. Commercial products already combine anti-islanding, synch-check, load shedding and breaker-control functions.
Multiple setting groups allow protection parameters to change when the system moves between grid-connected, islanded and restoration states. More advanced architectures use relay-to-relay communication or microgrid-controller signals to select the appropriate protection logic.
Communication-assisted differential, directional and adaptive protection can improve selectivity, but it creates greater dependence on network availability, clock synchronization, cybersecurity and configuration management.
Protection relays and microgrid controllers have different primary responsibilities. The controller manages generation, storage, power balance and operating modes, while the relay must continue detecting faults and issuing local trip commands if the controller or communication network becomes unavailable.
