Portable Partial Discharge Detector refers to a transportable or handheld instrument that acquires, displays and evaluates partial-discharge signals from energized or de-energized medium- and high-voltage electrical assets.
The market includes handheld survey detectors, multi-sensor diagnostic instruments, portable apparent-charge measurement systems and temporary monitoring units. Permanent online systems, sensor-only products, calibrators, complete high-voltage test sources and testing services are excluded.
The 2025 benchmark ASP is US$18,500 per unit, global sales volume is approximately 20.00k units, and the modeled average gross margin is approximately 38%.
The upstream industry chain includes TEV, UHF, HFCT and acoustic sensors, signal-conditioning circuits, high-speed acquisition components, processors, displays, batteries and enclosures. The midstream includes hardware design, signal processing, phase synchronization, noise suppression, calibration, software integration and certification. The downstream covers power utilities, generation plants, industrial facilities, renewable-energy projects, transportation infrastructure and electrical-equipment manufacturers.
Portable partial-discharge instruments serve two different purposes: rapid condition screening and detailed diagnostic measurement. A handheld survey detector can identify suspicious activity quickly, while a calibrated diagnostic system is required when users need apparent-charge values, repeatable acceptance results or deeper defect analysis.
TEV and airborne ultrasonic methods are widely used for energized switchgear surveys because they are non-intrusive and fast. HFCT sensors are commonly used on cable earth connections and transformer grounding conductors, while UHF methods are particularly useful for GIS and other enclosed high-voltage equipment.
A signal detected by a portable instrument is not automatically internal partial discharge. Radio transmissions, switching power supplies, corona outside the asset, variable-frequency drives and other interference sources can produce similar pulses. Phase-resolved patterns, frequency analysis, multi-sensor comparison and background-noise measurements are therefore important.
IEC 60270 charge-based measurements and IEC TS 62478 electromagnetic or acoustic measurements have different calibration principles. Results expressed in dB, dBmV, mV or signal counts should not be converted directly into picocoulombs unless a validated calibration relationship has been established for the specific measurement circuit.
Portable temporary monitors are increasingly used when a rapid survey identifies abnormal activity but permanent monitoring is not yet justified. They allow multiple channels to be observed over load cycles, switching events or environmental changes before maintenance decisions are made.
Future competition will focus on noise separation, automated pattern recognition, sensor identification, asset databases and standardized reporting. Automated diagnosis can support field personnel, but final interpretation still requires knowledge of asset design, sensor position, operating load and historical trends.
