Battery Pack Pressure Equalization Valve refers to a complete venting assembly installed on an automotive traction-battery enclosure to balance pressure between the sealed pack and the external environment.
During normal operation, a microporous membrane or controlled breathing path allows air and water vapour to pass while restricting the entry of liquid water, dust and other contaminants. Some products incorporate a mechanical relief mechanism that opens at a specified differential pressure, and dual-stage products provide high-flow emergency degassing during an abnormal internal-pressure event.
The market mainly includes membrane breathing valves, resealable pressure-relief valves, dual-stage equalization and emergency-degassing vents, and multifunction valves incorporating end-of-line leak-test features.
Bare membrane materials, adhesive vent patches without a valve housing, cell-level safety vents, standalone rupture discs, lead-acid battery vents, coolant valves and non-automotive vent products are excluded.

The upstream industry chain includes ePTFE and other microporous membranes, engineering plastics, aluminum and stainless steel, elastomers, springs, O-rings, particle filters, flame-arresting materials and fastening components. The midstream includes membrane processing, injection molding, metal forming, valve assembly, welding, sealing, airflow testing, opening-pressure testing, water-ingress testing and thermal validation. The downstream mainly covers passenger cars, commercial vehicles, buses and special-purpose electric vehicles.
A sealed battery pack experiences pressure changes when ambient temperature, altitude and internal temperature change. Without a controlled breathing path, repeated positive and negative pressure can load the pack cover, seals, joints and electrical interfaces.
A pressure-equalization valve allows slow bidirectional gas exchange during normal operation while maintaining protection against liquid water, dust and road contaminants. Gore positions automotive battery vents as components that combine pressure equalization with contamination protection, while Donaldson uses a similar first-stage breathing principle in its dual-stage battery vents.Dual-stage valves therefore use a membrane or controlled passage for routine breathing and a second mechanical opening for abnormal high-flow release. Donaldson describes the first stage as a contamination-protected pressure-equalization path and the second stage as an emergency gas-release mechanism.
The valve does not stop thermal runaway. Its purpose is to reduce uncontrolled pressure accumulation and help direct gas through a defined path.
