Some units can be connected to downstream heat recovery systems for electricity generation, district heating or industrial steam supply. A typical waste incinerator consists of a furnace or combustion chamber, a moving grate, rotary kiln or other combustion mechanism, a feeding device, ignition and auxiliary burners, combustion-air equipment, ash discharge equipment and an automated control system. Major commercial designs include moving grate, rotary kiln, fluidized bed and dual-chamber incinerators.

Large waste incinerators are primarily installed in municipal waste treatment plants, centralized hazardous waste treatment facilities and major industrial waste disposal sites, while small and modular units are commonly used by hospitals, industrial facilities, marine operators, remote communities and emergency-response organizations. Major manufacturing and technology-supply countries include China, Japan, Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom, the United States, South Korea and India. The product scope excludes pyrolysis furnaces, gasification units, cement-kiln co-processing equipment, standalone heat recovery boilers, flue-gas cleaning systems, turbine generators, complete plant engineering and waste incineration operation services.

In 2025, global production of waste incinerators reached approximately 1,650 to 1,850 units, measured by independent incinerators or core combustion units within individual incineration lines.
