Meeting 3D printing requirements also necessitates a stable supply of modifying agents, including toughening agents, nucleating agents, heat stabilizers, hydrolysis stabilizers, lubricants, masterbatches, filler powders, and functional additives. Compared to standard PLA, PLA designed for 3D printing places greater emphasis on resin purity, melt flowability, thermal stability, and batch-to-batch consistency, as these factors directly influence filament extrusion stability, nozzle flow continuity, interlayer strength, and the visual quality of the printed object.

Industry demand for PLA (polylactic acid) in 3D printing is primarily driven by the widespread adoption of desktop FDM printers, the expansion of the educational maker market, and the need for rapid prototyping and small-batch custom manufacturing in industrial design. PLA is a leading material for entry-level and consumer-grade 3D printing, offering advantages such as low printing temperatures, minimal warping, low odor, bio-based origins, and a wide range of colors. However, its heat resistance, toughness, long-term weatherability, and load-bearing capacity are inferior to materials like ABS, PETG, PA, and PC, limiting its use in functional parts and high-temperature environments.
