In 2025, global E-type Current Transformer production reached approximately 74 M Units.The average price is approximately $1.30.E-type Current Transformer, also referred to in power-electronics applications as an E-core current-sense transformer, is a passive electromagnetic component that uses an E-family magnetic core to provide proportional, galvanically isolated measurement of alternating or pulsed current.
E-type Current Transformer represent a narrow but technically important intersection of magnetic components, isolated current measurement and power-electronics control. They should not be treated simply as miniature versions of conventional utility current transformers. Line-frequency EI-core products are commonly used to measure inverter input current in air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines and other appliances, while EE-, EF- and EP-based current-sense transformers are primarily deployed in switched-mode power supplies, power-factor-correction circuits, motor drives, UPS equipment and other higher-frequency converters. The product category is difficult to quantify because manufacturers frequently market the finished component only as a “current-sense transformer” without disclosing the internal core geometry. Similar-looking packages may contain EE, EF, EP, toroidal or proprietary magnetic circuits. This study therefore applies a conservative boundary: companies with direct official evidence connecting an E-family core to a current-transformer function are included in the core formal list, whereas confirmed current-transformer manufacturers whose core geometry is not publicly identified remain in the extended supplier pool. This approach produces a smaller formal list but avoids overstating both the number of qualified suppliers and the addressable market. Official product information from TDK, Bourns, Bel, SHT and Shenzhen Click demonstrates that E-family products span line-frequency appliance sensing, high-frequency SMD devices and higher-current through-hole configurations.
The global supply structure consists of three principal layers. The first comprises international standard-component suppliers with catalogued part numbers, documented electrical characteristics and broad distribution networks. The second consists of high-volume Asian magnetic-component manufacturers supplying appliance, automotive, photovoltaic, storage and industrial customers through customized designs. The third comprises smaller regional specialists serving high-reliability, aerospace, defense, instrumentation or low-volume industrial applications. TDK, Bourns and Bel benefit from standardized product families and global design-in support. SHT has a specialized position in Japanese appliance current transformers and has developed a compact EI-16H product using a dedicated E/I core and proprietary magnetic circuit. Shenzhen Click explicitly offers E-shaped, U-shaped and toroidal current transformers with SMD and through-hole mounting options, while a group of Taiwanese suppliers provides EE-, EP- and EF-based design and customization capabilities. The broader supplier pool is materially larger than the formal core list because many companies can manufacture a suitable device on request but do not publish a standard E-core CT model. Consequently, the standard-product portion of the market is moderately concentrated, while the customized OEM portion remains fragmented and difficult to observe.
Demand growth is expected to remain in the mid-single-digit range. Inverter-controlled appliances provide the largest unit base, whereas industrial power electronics, renewable-energy converters, EV charging systems and automotive power supplies generate faster value growth and higher average selling prices. Product development is moving simultaneously in two directions: higher-accuracy line-frequency sensing and smaller, higher-frequency SMD components. The EI-16H illustrates the first route through a specified output-voltage tolerance of ±0.5% and a reduced mounting footprint. TDK’s EE- and EP-core families, Bourns’ EE5 and EF12.6 products and Bel’s EE-core SCS range illustrate the second route, supporting compact current sensing in switching applications. Competition from shunts, Hall-effect sensors, magnetoresistive devices and integrated isolated current-sensing ICs will limit growth in applications requiring DC measurement, digital output or very high integration. Nevertheless, E-core current transformers should retain a defensible position where galvanic isolation, low insertion loss, passive operation, relatively low cost and high-volume automated production are valued.
