The global FeCrCo Permanent Magnetic Material market is projected to grow from US$ 2536 million in 2025 to US$ 4107 million by 2032, at a CAGR of 7.3% (2026-2032), driven by critical product segments and diverse end‑use applications, while evolving U.S. tariff policies introduce trade‑cost volatility and supply‑chain uncertainty.
In 2025, global sales of iron-chromium-cobalt (FeCrCo) permanent magnetic material reached 599,000 tons, with an average price of $4,536 per ton.
FeCrCo permanent magnetic material is an age-hardening deformable permanent magnet alloy that emerged in the early 1970s. Its basic composition is 20%-33% chromium (Cr), 3%-25% cobalt (Co), with the balance being iron (Fe). Elements such as molybdenum (Mo), silicon (Si), and titanium (Ti) can be added to improve its properties. Its magnetic properties originate from a Spinodal decomposition mechanism: at high temperatures, a single α-phase solid solution is formed. After quenching and aging treatment at 500-700℃, it decomposes into a Fe-Co-rich, strongly magnetic α₁ phase and a Cr-rich, non-magnetic α₂ phase, forming a nanoscale dual-phase structure, thus producing permanent magnetic properties. This material, dubbed the "Transformer of permanent magnets," combines the magnetic properties of AlNiCo with excellent machinability, allowing for cold and hot plastic deformation processes such as rolling, drawing, stamping, and cutting.
The main raw materials for iron-chromium-cobalt permanent magnets include pure iron, metallic chromium, metallic cobalt, and small amounts of alloying elements such as molybdenum, silicon, and titanium. Cobalt is the most critical strategic raw material, and its international market price fluctuations directly affect alloy costs. Compared to AlNiCo (containing approximately 24% Co and 14% Ni), iron-chromium-cobalt can reduce its cobalt content by about 50% (medium-low cobalt alloys contain only 3%-15%), which is its significant cost advantage. Raw material costs account for approximately 60%-70% of the total production cost, with cobalt accounting for 40%-60% of the raw material cost. In terms of cost structure, the production of iron-chromium-cobalt permanent magnet materials involves complex processes such as vacuum induction melting (1400-1600℃), solution treatment (900-1200℃), cold deformation processing (rolling/drawing, deformation amount 50%-90%), and aging treatment (500-700℃). While plastic deformation increases processing costs, it achieves near-net-shape forming, reducing subsequent machining costs. In contrast, casting AlNiCo requires grinding, resulting in higher processing costs. It is worth noting that the machinability of iron-chromium-cobalt (hardness comparable to 304 stainless steel, approximately 30-35 HRC) allows it to be produced into 0.05mm fine wires and 0.1mm thin strips, an advantage unmatched by other permanent magnet materials, making it particularly suitable for manufacturing high-value-added components with small and complex shapes. Currently, the market price of iron-chromium-cobalt is approximately 1.5-2 times that of neodymium-iron-boron and 0.8-1.2 times that of AlNiCo, giving it an irreplaceable cost-performance advantage in applications requiring high temperature resistance (400℃), high stability, and complex shapes.
