The global market for Biodiesel and Bioethanol was estimated to be worth US$ 158236 million in 2025 and is projected to reach US$ 315292 million, growing at a CAGR of 10.4% from 2026 to 2032.
The potential shifts in the 2025 U.S. tariff framework pose substantial volatility risks to global markets. This report provides a comprehensive assessment of recent tariff adjustments and international strategic countermeasures on Biodiesel and Bioethanol cross-border industrial footprints, capital allocation patterns, regional economic interdependencies, and supply chain reconfigurations.
In 2025, global sales of biodiesel and bioethanol are projected to reach 157.6 million tons, with an average price of $1,004 per ton.
Biodiesel is an environmentally friendly bio-liquid fuel prepared from unprocessed or used vegetable oils and animal fats through esterification and transesterification. This biofuel can be used like diesel. Bioethanol refers to the conversion of various biomass into fuel alcohol through the fermentation of microorganisms. It can be used alone or mixed with gasoline to make ethanol gasoline as a vehicle fuel.
There is a fundamental difference in the feedstock systems for biodiesel and bioethanol: biodiesel relies on lipid-based raw materials (vegetable oils, waste oils/fats, and animal fats), whereas bioethanol relies on sugar-, starch-, or cellulose-based raw materials (such as sugarcane, corn, and crop stalks). In China, the primary feedstocks for biodiesel are waste cooking oil ("gutter oil") and imported palm fatty acid distillate, with an estimated annual available resource volume of approximately 4 to 6 million tons. Bioethanol production, conversely, relies predominantly on starch-based feedstocks such as corn and wheat; production output is projected to reach approximately 3.6 million tons in 2024. Additionally, China generates over 800 million tons of collectible crop stalks and cellulosic biomass annually, providing an ample feedstock reserve for the production of cellulosic ethanol. Raw material costs constitute the dominant component of the total production costs for both fuels—accounting for approximately 70% to 85% of biodiesel production costs and 60% to 75% of bioethanol production costs. Notably, due to the technical complexity involved in the pretreatment and hydrolysis stages, the production costs for cellulosic ethanol currently remain significantly higher than those for grain-based ethanol.
Regarding cost structure, biodiesel (specifically FAME) is produced via the transesterification process, which entails relatively low capital investment in equipment; however, the economic viability of this process is significantly influenced by the value recovery of the glycerol generated as a byproduct. Second-generation biodiesel (HVO), on the other hand, is produced using a hydrogenation process; while this method requires a high level of capital intensity, it yields a product with superior performance characteristics. The production costs of bioethanol vary significantly depending on the feedstock used: First-generation grain-based ethanol technology is mature and relatively low-cost (approximately 4,500–5,500 RMB/ton), yet it faces controversy regarding the issue of "competing with food crops for land." Although second-generation cellulosic ethanol utilizes inexpensive feedstocks (such as crop residues), technical bottlenecks—including pretreatment (which accounts for approximately 33% of total costs), enzymatic hydrolysis, and pentose conversion—result in production costs that remain relatively high. Notably, the calorific value of bioethanol (26.8 MJ/kg) is significantly lower than that of gasoline (44 MJ/kg), resulting in a higher cost per unit of energy. In contrast, biodiesel (with calorific values of approximately 40 MJ/kg for FAME and 44 MJ/kg for HVO) possesses an energy density comparable to that of petroleum-based diesel, thereby offering superior fuel economy. As advancements in cellulase technology progress and economies of scale take effect, the production costs of cellulosic ethanol are expected to decline gradually; conversely, the costs of biodiesel remain highly susceptible to fluctuations in international prices for oils and fats, as well as changes in export policies.
