Copper Passivation is a functional surface-treatment chemical used for post-treatment of copper and copper-alloy surfaces. It is applied by immersion, spraying, post-plating treatment, or continuous-line coating to form an ultrathin, transparent, compact protective layer on copper, brass, bronze, copper plating, copper foil, copper wire, busbars, terminals, and copper components. It is usually a colorless to pale-yellow transparent liquid, but may also be supplied as a concentrate, powder, oil-soluble additive, or organic protective-film system. Typical formulations include organic heterocyclic corrosion inhibitors, film-forming aids, surfactants, pH regulators, complexing agents, preservatives, water-stability components, and functional additives.

The protective film must be thin enough not to alter copper color, brightness, contact resistance, solderability, adhesion, or downstream plating compatibility, yet stable enough to resist humidity, sulfides, salt spray, fingerprints, packaging volatiles, and heat. Poor formulation control can cause water spots, haze, rainbow marks, soldering failure, reduced adhesion, abnormal contact behavior, or localized blackening during storage. In addition, nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds, preservatives, complexing agents, and metal-conversion systems may face environmental, wastewater, and customer restricted-substance scrutiny. Downstream demand for Copper Passivation will move toward high cleanliness, low film thickness, chromium-free chemistry, and electronic functionality. Consumer electronics, automotive electronics, and telecommunications require copper surfaces to remain stable through storage, transport, assembly, soldering, and packaging.
