Thoriated tungsten electrodes are a type of tungsten-based electrode material produced by adding thorium oxide as a dopant to a tungsten (W) matrix. They are primarily manufactured using powder metallurgy processes, which involve mixing high-purity tungsten powder with a specific proportion of thorium oxide powder, followed by pressing, sintering, swaging, drawing, and grinding to create electrodes with stable dimensions and excellent high-temperature performance.In 2025, global sales volume of thoriated tungsten electrodes is 720 tons, with a production capacity of 960 tons, an average selling price of $37/kg, and an average gross margin of 25%–35%.
Due to the low electron work function of thorium oxide, its addition enhances the tungsten electrode's electron emission capability, arc stability, arc-starting performance, and current-carrying capacity. Consequently, thoriated tungsten electrodes have long been among the most widely used types of electrodes for Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG/GTAW) welding; they are particularly well-suited for direct current (DC) welding and enable high-quality welding of materials such as stainless steel, carbon steel, nickel-based alloys, and titanium alloys.

Thorium oxide lowers the electron work function and enhances electron emission capability, resulting in excellent arc-starting performance and arc stability.
