Unlike homogeneous ion-exchange membranes, where ion-exchange groups are chemically integrated into a continuous polymer matrix, heterogeneous membranes contain discrete ion-exchange particles embedded throughout the binder, offering lower production costs, good mechanical strength, and satisfactory chemical resistance, although with somewhat lower ionic conductivity and selectivity. They are widely used in electrodialysis (ED), electrodeionization (EDI), desalination, wastewater treatment, acid and alkali recovery, food and beverage processing, hydrometallurgy, and electrochemical industries. The supply chain begins with upstream raw materials including ion-exchange resins (typically styrene-divinylbenzene-based), polymer binders such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), reinforcing fabrics, solvents, additives, and catalysts. Midstream activities involve resin preparation, membrane compounding, sheet formation, reinforcement lamination, surface treatment, quality testing, and module fabrication by specialized membrane manufacturers. Downstream, the finished membranes are integrated into electrodialysis stacks, EDI systems, chlor-alkali equipment, water purification plants, industrial wastewater treatment systems, food and pharmaceutical processing facilities, mining operations, and chemical production plants, where they enable efficient ion separation and resource recovery.
