Neutral grounding resistors, also known as neutral earthing resistors, are power resistor devices connected between the neutral point of a generator, transformer, grounding transformer or power distribution system and earth. They are used to limit ground-fault current during single-line-to-ground faults, reduce transient overvoltage, mitigate arc-flash and thermal-mechanical stress, and provide a measurable fault current for protection relays and fault detection. A typical NGR system may include stainless steel or alloy resistor elements, insulation supports, terminals, an enclosure or outdoor cabinet, ventilation and heat dissipation structures, grounding terminals, disconnect switches, current transformers, space heaters, temperature monitoring and protection accessories. These systems are widely used in power generation, substations, industrial distribution, mining, petrochemical plants, data centers, marine systems, rail transit, wind power, solar power, energy storage and medium- or high-voltage distribution networks.
Neutral grounding resistors, or neutral earthing resistors, should be analyzed as power-system grounding protection equipment rather than as ordinary resistors or generic electrical accessories. Their core function is to connect the neutral point of a generator, transformer or distribution system to earth through a designed resistance value, limiting single-line-to-ground fault current to a controlled level. This helps reduce transient overvoltage, arcing damage, thermal and mechanical stress, while providing sufficient current for protection relays, alarms and fault detection. The category is different from grounding transformers, which provide a neutral point, and from Petersen coils, which use resonant grounding principles. It is also different from ordinary load resistors because NGRs must meet medium- or high-voltage insulation, short-time current, temperature rise, enclosure protection, grounding safety and project-specific power-system requirements. From the supply-side perspective, the market is project-based, customized and regionally fragmented. International suppliers such as Post Glover, Hubbell Powerohm, MegaResistors, Crohm, Cressall and Hilkar have strong positions in NGR/NER systems, industrial power projects and medium-voltage grounding applications. Broader electrical equipment companies may participate through power distribution and grounding system solutions, but their role as actual NGR manufacturers must be verified project by project. In China, neutral grounding resistor cabinets are commonly supplied by electrical equipment, industrial resistor and grounding-system manufacturers, particularly for 6–35kV distribution networks, power plants, industrial facilities and renewable power projects. Competition depends not only on resistor element manufacturing, but also on electrical design, thermal design, insulation coordination, enclosure engineering, testing capability and customer qualification. Demand is driven by medium-voltage distribution protection, generator and transformer protection, industrial power safety, data center critical power systems, mining, petrochemical plants, marine systems, and renewable energy infrastructure. As distribution networks become more cable-intensive and system capacitive current increases, resistance grounding becomes an important option for controlling ground-fault current and reducing overvoltage risk in selected systems. The market is not a high-volume consumer product market; it is an engineered equipment market where unit value varies significantly depending on voltage class, fault current rating, duty time, indoor or outdoor installation, enclosure material, monitoring functions and accessory integration. Therefore, market analysis should combine revenue, project count and installed-system demand rather than relying only on unit shipments. Technology development is focused on reliability, modularization, monitoring and environmental robustness. Traditional NGRs use stainless steel grid, edgewound or alloy resistor elements in open-frame or enclosed structures. Higher-end systems increasingly integrate current transformers, disconnect switches, space heaters, temperature monitoring, alarm contacts, ground-fault detection and remote communication. Data centers, renewable energy plants, offshore systems, mining sites and petrochemical facilities require better thermal performance, corrosion resistance, anti-condensation design, seismic strength, maintainability and condition monitoring. Although the product category is technically mature, suppliers that can provide tested, certified, application-specific and system-integrated NGR solutions are better positioned than vendors offering only basic resistor assemblies.
