Stirling Cryogenic Cooler is a regenerative, closed-cycle mechanical refrigeration device that operates on the reversed Stirling thermodynamic cycle to continuously transfer heat from a cryogenic cold end to an ambient-temperature heat-rejection end. An electric motor or other mechanical drive causes the compression piston and displacer to produce periodic compression, expansion and displacement of a fixed quantity of working gas, typically helium. The working gas repeatedly passes through a regenerator, stores and releases heat during each cycle, absorbs heat during expansion at the cold end, and rejects compression heat at the warm end. Unlike a Stirling engine, which converts heat into mechanical power, a Stirling Cryogenic Cooler consumes electrical or mechanical power to produce refrigeration.
