Urolithin A is a natural compound with multiple biological activities. It is a yellow or light yellow solid powder at room temperature and pressure. It can be dissolved in highly polar organic solvents such as dimethyl sulfoxide and N,N-dimethylformamide, but has poor solubility in low-polar petroleum ether and ether, and also has poor solubility in water.
Urolithin A is a secondary metabolite of the natural polyphenol compound ellagitannin metabolized by intestinal microorganisms, and is also an intestinal microbial metabolite of ellagic acid. After the human body ingests ellagitannin and ellagic acid, urolithin A is metabolized by intestinal flora.
Urolithin A can inhibit the activity of nuclear factor κB (NF-κB), reduce the production of inflammatory factors, and thus reduce inflammatory damage. As a mitochondrial autophagy inducer, urolithin A can prevent muscle aging and promote cell health, thereby playing an anti-aging role. It can also inhibit the activity of telomerase and delay cell aging. Urolithin A can scavenge free radicals in the body, protect cells from oxidative damage, and maintain the normal physiological functions of the body. It can also bind to peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) and activate the PPARγ signaling pathway, thereby enhancing the antioxidant capacity of cells.
