Magnetic-core current sensors are isolated current-measurement devices that use a magnetic core, toroidal core, split core, iron core, or compensated magnetic circuit to concentrate, couple, detect, or balance the magnetic field generated by a current-carrying conductor. Typical products include current transformers, open-loop Hall-effect current sensors, closed-loop Hall-effect current transducers, zero-flux current sensors, fluxgate current transducers, residual-current sensors, and iron-core current probes. Their key value lies in safe, isolated, non-contact, wide-range, and reliable current measurement.
Magnetic-core current sensors are a mature but continuously upgraded category within industrial current measurement and power electronics. The category includes current transformers, open-loop Hall-effect current sensors, closed-loop Hall-effect current transducers, zero-flux current sensors, fluxgate current transducers, residual-current sensors, and iron-core current probes. These products use a magnetic core, toroidal core, split core, iron core, or compensated magnetic circuit to concentrate, detect, couple, or balance the magnetic field generated by a current-carrying conductor.
The market remains important because magnetic-core structures offer strong advantages in electrical isolation, safety, wide current range, robustness, and system-level reliability. Traditional current transformers are widely used in AC power monitoring, building energy management, switchgear, and low-voltage distribution because they are cost-effective and reliable. Open-loop Hall current sensors are suitable for AC/DC measurement in inverters, motor drives, UPS systems, charging equipment, and general industrial power electronics. Closed-loop Hall, zero-flux, and fluxgate sensors are used where higher accuracy, better linearity, lower offset drift, faster response, and wider bandwidth are required.
Demand growth is mainly driven by electric vehicles, EV charging infrastructure, energy storage systems, photovoltaic inverters, industrial automation, data-center UPS systems, motor drives, rail traction, and smart power distribution. As SiC and GaN power devices, high-frequency inverters, 800V EV platforms, and high-power charging systems expand, customers are placing more emphasis on bandwidth, response time, insulation performance, common-mode immunity, temperature stability, and long-term measurement accuracy.

CR Magnetics, NK Technologies, Magnelab, and Chauvin Arnoux / AEMC have strong positions in North American and European industrial monitoring and test applications. Chinese suppliers such as Acrel, YHDC, and Socan are becoming more competitive in split-core CTs, open-loop Hall sensors, energy monitoring, and cost-sensitive applications.
Magnetic-core current sensors will continue to coexist with coreless Hall ICs, shunt resistors, Rogowski coils, and fiber-optic current sensors. Coreless ICs are attractive for compact board-level integration, shunt resistors are strong in low-cost and low-voltage precision measurement, Rogowski coils are useful for flexible installation and very large AC current measurement, and fiber-optic sensors serve specialized high-voltage applications. However, magnetic-core sensors remain highly relevant in applications that require isolated high-current measurement, AC/DC compatibility, industrial safety certification, high noise immunity, wide current ranges, and proven long-term reliability.
Over the medium term, low-end current transformers and open-loop Hall sensors will remain price-competitive, while higher-value growth will come from closed-loop Hall sensors, zero-flux and fluxgate current transducers, wideband current probes, automotive-grade sensors, high-insulation packages, and customized high-current sensing assemblies. Suppliers with strong magnetic core design, compensation electronics, insulation design, thermal stability, calibration capability, and application engineering support will be better positioned than companies offering only standard low-cost CT products.
