Sensor signal conditioner ICs are analog or mixed-signal integrated circuits used to interface raw sensing elements with electronic control or data acquisition systems. They typically provide sensor excitation, amplification, filtering, offset and gain correction, temperature compensation, linearization, calibration memory, analog-to-digital conversion, digital correction algorithms, and output interfaces such as analog voltage, current loop, PWM, SENT, I2C, SPI, LIN, or other custom interfaces.
Sensor signal conditioner ICs are a key enabling component between sensing elements and electronic control systems. Their main function is to convert weak, nonlinear, temperature-sensitive, and process-dependent raw sensor signals into accurate, calibrated, and system-readable outputs. A typical sensor signal conditioner may integrate sensor excitation, programmable gain amplification, filtering, offset and gain correction, temperature compensation, linearization, analog-to-digital conversion, non-volatile calibration memory, diagnostic functions, and output interfaces such as analog voltage, current loop, PWM, SENT, I2C, SPI, or LIN.
The value of these ICs is not limited to signal amplification. In many pressure, force, torque, temperature, humidity, position, gas, infrared, and MEMS-based sensors, the sensing element itself has large offset, drift, nonlinearity, and unit-to-unit variation. A dedicated signal conditioner IC helps sensor manufacturers compensate for these errors during production calibration, reduce external component count, improve yield, shorten calibration time, and deliver a more consistent sensor module to automotive, industrial, medical, and consumer customers.
Automotive applications represent one of the most important high-value markets.
