The quality factor (Q-factor) indicates the resonator’s ability to confine light with minimal energy loss, with high-Q values (typically 10⁵–10⁸+) leading to sharp resonance peaks. The free spectral range (FSR), defined as the wavelength spacing between adjacent resonances, depends inversely on the ring's circumference. Resonance wavelength, finesse (FSR divided by linewidth), insertion loss, and extinction ratio are critical for determining filtering and sensing accuracy. The coupling coefficient governs how efficiently light is transferred between the bus waveguide and the ring, influencing resonance depth and Q-factor. Other key parameters include the group index (for dispersion effects), the ring radius (affecting FSR and bending losses), and the mode volume, which impacts the field enhancement and sensitivity for nonlinear or sensing applications. These parameters are finely tuned based on specific application requirements in photonic circuits, sensing, and optical communication systems.
