These parameters include ionic conductivity (typically ranging from 10⁻⁵ to 10⁻¹ S/cm depending on the ion type), electrochemical stability window (up to ~5.0 V for lithium systems and ~1.0–1.2 V for proton systems), and operating temperature range (from room temperature up to 200°C for high-temperature polymers like PBI). Mechanical properties such as tensile strength (10–50 MPa), elongation (10–200%), and membrane thickness (10–100 µm) influence structural integrity and handling. Additional factors include water uptake (10–30% for proton-conducting membranes), transference number (ideally close to 1 for efficient ion transport), chemical and thermal stability, dielectric constant (3–20), and dimensional stability (low swelling ratio preferred). These attributes collectively define the membrane’s efficiency, durability, and compatibility with various electrochemical systems.
